Lando Norris Takes the Wheel: F1 Star Dives into Rallying with Toyota GR Yaris Experience!
Formula 1 sensation Lando Norris has thrown the racing world into a frenzy by taking a thrilling detour from the asphalt to the icy terrain of Sweden, where he put his skills to the test behind the wheel of a Toyota GR Yaris Rally2. As the adrenaline-fueled excitement builds ahead of this week’s Australian Grand Prix, Norris embraced the exhilarating world of rallying, an endeavor that has long captivated his interest.
In a spectacular showcase organized by his sponsor Monster Energy, Norris joined an elite group of motorsport titans, including the legendary 2003 World Rally champion Petter Solberg and his promising son, Oliver Solberg, the 2026 Monte Carlo Rally winner. This unique event unfolded on a frozen lake, where Norris experienced the raw power and finesse of rally cars and drifting machines, pushing the limits of performance like never before.
Oliver Solberg, the young star of the rally scene, took it upon himself to guide Norris through the intricacies of handling the GR Yaris Rally2, a vehicle he expertly maneuvered to the WRC2 title last year. The camaraderie between the two drivers was palpable, with Norris expressing his excitement about the new driving style. “I’m learning. It is a different style of driving. I have done a bit of ice driving but not in a rally car, only in a road car, so it is different. I’m learning a lot, Oliver is helping me understand it. It is cool,” he said in a Monster Energy video capturing the electrifying event.
Not one to shy away from challenges, Norris revealed that he experienced a few off-track excursions during his run, a testament to testing the limits of his abilities. “We went off a few times but that happens, you need to try the limits, so fair play, good job,” commented Oliver Solberg, recognizing the learning curve involved in rally driving.
Petter Solberg, watching from behind the wheel of a Rally2-spec Volkswagen Polo, was thoroughly impressed with Norris’s performance. “It has been an incredible event. I’ve really enjoyed it but I’m so happy to see [Lando] Norris enjoy it so much,” he remarked. Petter further added, “I was very impressed actually and at the end now he [Lando] is pushing properly. I was driving behind him and I didn’t catch him, so he was actually really good.”
Norris’s foray into rally driving is not an isolated incident; he joins a growing list of Formula 1 drivers exploring the world of rallying. Max Verstappen has also taken a spin in an ex-Sebastien Ogier M-Sport Ford Fiesta WRC car, while Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll tested a Citroen C3 Rally2 on gravel stages in Portugal last year.
As the motorsport community buzzes with excitement over Norris’s rally escapade, fans eagerly await to see how this experience might influence his performance in the upcoming Australian Grand Prix. Will this venture into the icy realm of rallying give him an edge on the F1 circuit? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure: Lando Norris is proving that he is more than just a Formula 1 driver; he is a true motorsport enthusiast ready to conquer any challenge that comes his way!
