In a heart-stopping moment at the Indianapolis 500 Open Test, racing sensation Kyle Larson of Arrow McLaren/Hendrick Motorsports found himself in a high-speed collision with the Turn 1 wall, becoming the first driver to crash during the event.
Larson, the NASCAR champion, miraculously emerged unscathed after his No. 17 Chevy veered off course during a qualifying simulation, reaching speeds exceeding 235mph. The intense run caused Larson’s car to drift out of the racing line, leading to a bone-chilling impact with the wall that left the right-side suspension in shambles.
As the Dallara DW12 car careened through Turn 2, it suffered another blow to the right-rear suspension before finally coming to a halt. Despite the harrowing crash, Larson managed to extricate himself from the wreckage, with the mangled machine being swiftly removed for repairs.
Reflecting on the incident, Larson shared, “I’m happy to crash my first Indy car and live through it. We’ll just work on it and try to make the balance more comfortable.” While the crash was a setback, Larson’s spirit remained unbroken as he expressed determination to bounce back stronger.
Following a check-up by IndyCar’s medical team, Larson was given the green light to resume testing, with his crew working tirelessly to ready the car for the afternoon session.
