Piastri Under Pressure: Young Aussie Faces Make-or-Break Middle East Showdown in Three-Way Title Fight
All eyes turn to Oscar Piastri as Formula 1 heads back to the Middle East, with the young Australian now forced into all-out attack mode against McLaren teammate Lando Norris and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in a championship fight that has exploded into life.
The final flyaway rounds have transformed the title landscape.
Norris has found a terrifying new level, storming to dominant victories in Mexico and Brazil, while Piastri endured a bruising São Paulo weekend — crashing out of the Sprint and limping home fifth after contact in the Grand Prix. His deficit ballooned to 24 points.
Las Vegas was supposed to be a reset.
But instead of clarity, chaos struck. Piastri would have finished fourth — leaving him 30 points off Norris — before a double McLaren disqualification for excessive skid block wear detonated the standings.
Suddenly, Piastri and Verstappen are just 24 points behind Norris with two rounds left.
The title fight is back on.

Piastri arrived in Las Vegas ready for war
With McLaren unveiling its “scratchcard car” for fans — a playful nod that Piastri hoped would be the only thing scraped over the weekend — the Aussie knew he couldn’t afford to tiptoe around the Strip Circuit.
🗣️ Oscar Piastri, McLaren F1 Driver
“Vegas is a pretty unique circuit, so we’re going to be on our toes. It’s not been the easiest place for us in the past couple of years, but we’ve learned a lot.
We might get some weather — that’s always fun — and racing in Vegas is unpredictable. We’ll see what we get.”
But unpredictable or not, Piastri knew the stakes. After the Brazil crash, caution was not an option — and that remains true heading into Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
🗣️ Piastri on his title fight
“I need to try and have a good weekend and make up some points in the championship if I can. I’ll be taking some chances out there.”

From title favourite… to title hunter
Earlier in the season, Piastri looked like the man to beat.
Confident. Relentless. Efficient.
His first world championship seemed a matter of when, not if.
But Norris’ late-season surge and Verstappen’s lurking threat have flipped the script.
Now, with just two rounds to go, Piastri must deliver the performances of his life in Lusail and Yas Marina if he wants to lift a maiden crown.
