Denny Hamlin is not a fan of the recently suggested charter restriction. Cup Series teams and NASCAR are in negotiations for a new charter agreement, as the current one is set to expire this year. As part of the new agreement, NASCAR has implemented a change in the system that would prevent teams from owning more than three charters, with JGR and HMS receiving special exemptions.
However, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver does not believe this is the right approach to achieve equality. He argues that regardless of rule changes, the top teams will always have the best cars, teams, and drivers, making it impossible to prevent them from continuing to dominate as they have done for a long time.
The three-time Daytona 500 winner also expressed frustration with the slow progress of charter negotiations. He emphasized that he and the 23XI Racing team are eager to see the negotiations concluded soon, as the group of owners is hesitant to make future investments as time runs out.
During a recent podcast, Denny Hamlin mentioned that no team actually requested the changes proposed by NASCAR during the negotiation period. This implies that the suggested changes are solely a product of NASCAR’s own initiative.
Although the new proposal may seem unconventional, it is not counterproductive. Limiting teams to four charters is the right decision, as some teams often expand beyond their capabilities and end up harming themselves.
