At the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series’ adrenaline-fueled race at Circuit of the Americas (COTA), Chase Elliott, the Hendrick Motorsports driver, found himself in the heart of drama. Known for his exceptional performance on road courses, Elliott was having a less than stellar day as the race kicked off. Despite his impressive average lap times, he wasn’t seen as a likely contender for the pole position. However, when the stakes were high, Elliott didn’t disappoint.

In a heart-stopping final lap, Elliott was able to clinch the third position, marking his highest-ever start at COTA in his Cup Series tenure. This was a ray of hope for the driver, who had been grappling with a series of unimpressive performances on road courses lately. However, before Elliott could fully immerse himself in the race, catastrophe struck.

The race had barely begun when Ross Chastain, known for his aggressive racing approach, made a move that turned Elliott’s fortunes upside down. Chastain, charging from the inside into Turn 1, collided with Elliott and sent his No. 9 car into a dizzying spin. This reckless move, a signature Chastain dive-bomb, did not lead to a caution from NASCAR officials. A disgruntled Elliott managed to make his way back to the pit lane amidst the chaos.

Elliott’s team was seething with anger over Chastain’s move. Alan Gustafson, Elliott’s crew chief, didn’t mince words when instructing Elliott over the radio to retaliate when the opportunity arose. “We’re gonna have to pay that back because I’m over people like that constantly doing dumb stuff. When we get a chance to send him, we’re sending that 1 car,” Gustafson said.

However, showing remarkable maturity in the heat of the moment, Elliott sought to ensure he wasn’t in the wrong before taking any retaliatory action. “No, that’s totally fine. I’ll do what I need to do. But I just need to make sure I wasn’t in the wrong before I do it,” Elliott responded. His team quickly reassured him, placing the blame squarely on Chastain’s reckless move.

This incident has stirred up a whirlwind of controversy, and it remains to be seen how this will unfold in the upcoming races. The incident between Elliott and Chastain has become a hot topic among fans, adding another intense layer to the high-stakes world of NASCAR racing. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
