In a race packed with drama and chaotic incidents, Chase Elliott emerged from the mayhem to secure a solid P8 finish at Atlanta on Sunday, despite being involved in a series of close calls on pit road and on the track.
The NASCAR Cup Series event saw wild moments both on and off the track, culminating in a last-corner wreck before the eventual race winner crossed the line. But Elliott’s biggest challenge came on pit road when a collision with Team Penske’s Austin Cindric almost derailed his race. As Elliott’s No. 9 Chevy exited the pits, he collided with Cindric’s car, who was entering the pit lane, costing both drivers valuable time.
The chaos didn’t end there. Shortly after, Corey LaJoie squeezed Elliott into a dangerous three-wide situation with Ricky Stenhouse Jr., resulting in contact between all three cars. However, Elliott managed to escape without significant damage, a stroke of luck that helped him stay in contention.
Speaking to the media after the race, Elliott reflected on the incident, saying, “I didn’t lose any significant time or damage, so I’m fortunate for that. It could have been worse, especially with the No. 7 car making it three-wide.”
Elliott’s P8 finish at Atlanta was a much-needed boost after a disappointing outing at Darlington last week. The result gives him a positive outlook heading into next weekend’s race at Watkins Glen, where he hopes to build on the momentum.
With the strong performance, Elliott now holds a 24-point cushion above the Round of 16 playoff cut-off line. A win in the coming rounds could solidify his position in the championship hunt and give the No. 9 team even greater momentum in their playoff push.
