Carlos Sainz’s unexpected crash at the Australian Grand Prix has been attributed to a ‘big torque kick’ during an upshift in his Williams vehicle. The unusual incident occurred near the final corner at Albert Park under the Safety Car conditions. Despite the setback, the team was able to identify the issue unequivocally, providing some solace to the 30-year-old driver.

Sainz, who was making his debut for Williams in the Australian Grand Prix, saw his race cut short due to the crash. The wet conditions at Albert Park on Sunday proved to be a challenge, and Sainz’s race was over within a few laps. However, an in-depth review of the incident allowed the driver to understand the cause of the crash better and provide valuable insights to his team.

After his premature exit from the race, Sainz made his way back to the Williams garage, where he played a key role in shaping team-mate Alex Albon’s strategy. Albon had a successful run, initially finishing fourth. However, a successful appeal against a five-second penalty for Kimi Antonelli saw Albon demoted to fifth.

Sainz, while discussing the crash, revealed that it was not caused by a power surge. Instead, it was a big torque kick that resulted from a poorly executed upshift. While the technical details were kept under wraps for further analysis and improvement, Sainz assured that the team would learn from this incident and work towards better outcomes.

Despite Sainz’s crash, the team had reasons to celebrate with Alex Albon’s performance. Despite Antonelli’s penalty being overturned, a top-five finish is a significant achievement for Williams, a team that finished ninth in the Constructors’ standings last season.

Albon, the former Red Bull driver, confessed that the race was far from comfortable due to changing conditions. With gusting winds and fluctuating conditions, the focus was on avoiding mistakes and capitalizing on opportunities. Despite some challenging moments, the team executed the strategy efficiently, resulting in a top-five finish.

The Australian Grand Prix results signify a promising start for Williams, showcasing a marked improvement from last year. The team is keen on leveraging such opportunities, especially against rookie drivers, to secure points early in the season. The Australian Grand Prix has set the stage for an exciting season ahead, with lessons learned and opportunities capitalized. Sainz, now focused on the upcoming China race, is keen on kick-starting his season on a high note.
