In an electrifying start to the 2025 Formula 1 season, Lando Norris of McLaren snatched the victory at the Australian Grand Prix, held at the Albert Park Circuit on March 16. The thrilling race, marked by dramatic weather conditions and fierce competition, saw Norris emerging as the championship leader for the first time ever.

The race day in Melbourne was plagued by a rainstorm, causing the cancellation of the Formula 2’s feature race and setting the stage for a testing race on the slippery track, which proved challenging for both seasoned and rookie drivers. However, Norris, with a few exceptions, skillfully maneuvered his car across 57 laps, holding off his Red Bull counterpart, Max Verstappen, who was in relentless pursuit until the end.

Despite predictions of a struggle for the seventh and eighth spots, Verstappen managed to bag 18 points, demonstrating his formidable resilience and proving yet again why he is a tough contender in long races. Meanwhile, George Russell of Mercedes secured the third spot, showcasing his knack for consistent performance despite being relatively inconspicuous.

Ferrari had a disappointing weekend, with the performance of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc falling short of expectations. The team’s hopes were dashed by the end of Saturday, and the next 24 hours only exacerbated their woes.

Here are the key takeaways from the 2025 Australian GP as the F1 season gets off to a thrilling start:

1. Max Verstappen: The Unstoppable Force: Despite trailing Norris and Oscar Piastri by 16 seconds at one point due to a rare error, Verstappen’s determined pursuit served as a testament to his indomitable spirit. Even in the final stages of the race, he kept the leaders in his crosshairs, narrowly missing out on a win. His performance has sent a clear message: if his team can gain a fraction of a second in the initial rounds, McLaren will have a tough time keeping him at bay.

2. Lando Norris: A Champion in the Making or Not?: Norris’s victory over Verstappen may look impressive on paper, but his performance raised several questions about his pace compared to the slower Red Bull and his teammate. Despite having a significant car advantage, he was under constant pressure from Piastri and Verstappen, making crucial errors that almost cost him the Grand Prix. These persistent mistakes with a dominant car suggest Norris might still be grappling with the demons of the 2024 season.

3. Oscar Piastri: A Promising Talent: Piastri demonstrated impressive pace in the 2025 Australian GP, but his performance was marred by critical errors at crucial moments, which caused him to lose his grip on the race. Despite showing promise, he failed to capitalize on opportunities, leaving him with a massive challenge as the season progresses.

4. Ferrari: A Need for Improvement: The Ferrari team, with its ambitious lineup of Hamilton and Leclerc, had high hopes for the season. However, their poor performance in Australia, marked by subpar pace, procedural errors, and poor decisions, left them with much to reflect upon and rectify if they aim to avoid a repeat of the 2020 season.

5. The Rookies: A Steep Learning Curve: The race proved to be a challenging debut for the six rookies on the 2025 Formula 1 grid. Only Kimi Antonelli and Oliver Bearman managed to finish the race, and with numerous mistakes, all the newcomers have a steep learning curve ahead.

The 2025 Australian GP offered a thrilling start to the Formula 1 season, with Lando Norris emerging victorious. Despite the challenges, the race provided valuable lessons for all the drivers, setting the stage for a fiercely competitive season ahead.
