Helmut Marko Slams Formula 1 Stewards Over Verstappen Penalty

In a fiery outburst, Helmut Marko, the Red Bull motorsport advisor, criticized the Formula 1 stewards for handing Max Verstappen a five-second penalty during the 2025 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Marko vehemently defended Verstappen, arguing that the Dutchman had “nowhere to go” during his intense battle with Oscar Piastri on Lap 1.

The penalty, which deemed Verstappen to have gained an advantage by leaving the track while fending off Piastri, ultimately cost him the race victory. Marko expressed his frustration at the stewards’ decision, pointing out what he perceived as inconsistencies in their rulings. He referenced incidents in the Formula 2 races where similar actions only resulted in warnings, questioning the fairness of the penalty imposed on Verstappen.

Despite the setback, Verstappen showcased his exceptional skills by leading the early laps and building a considerable gap to Piastri. Marko highlighted Verstappen’s impressive performance, noting that even a second-place finish exceeded their expectations based on Friday’s results. He emphasized Red Bull’s confidence in their speed and tire management moving forward, indicating a strong resolve to continue the championship battle.

Marko remained unfazed by the 12-point gap between Verstappen and Piastri in the Drivers’ Championship, drawing parallels to past comebacks in Formula 1 history. He expressed optimism about Red Bull’s prospects, particularly with McLaren’s internal competition potentially working in their favor. As the season progresses into the European leg, Red Bull aims to refine their setup and challenge for victories, with Verstappen poised to fight fiercely for every point.

The post-race fallout from the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix underscores the intense competition and strategic maneuvering in the Formula 1 championship battle, setting the stage for a thrilling continuation of the season.
