Max Verstappen shocked the Formula 1 world by clinching a “very special” pole position at the Japanese Grand Prix, leaving McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri trailing behind. Despite struggling with his car earlier in the weekend, Verstappen’s final lap in Q3 secured his first pole of the season, edging out Norris by a mere 0.012s.

Verstappen expressed his elation, stating, “The last lap was just flat out. I mean, around here being on the limit – or maybe even a bit over in places – is incredibly rewarding.” The Red Bull driver admitted that his unexpected pole made it one of his most special achievements, considering the challenging start to the season and the uncertainties faced during the weekend.

However, Verstappen remains cautious about his race pace compared to the McLarens, recognizing their superior performance in previous races. He emphasized the importance of focusing on their own race strategy and execution, especially with unpredictable weather conditions adding another level of complexity to the race.

Acknowledging the championship’s long nature, Verstappen highlighted the significance of consistent point-scoring and maximizing opportunities to secure the best possible outcome. Despite starting at the front, he is aware of the fierce competition and the need to deliver a strong performance to maintain his position.

As the Japanese Grand Prix promises an intense battle at the front, Verstappen’s pole position has set the stage for a thrilling race day, where he aims to convert his qualifying success into a victorious performance against formidable rivals.
