Former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher has dived into the controversy surrounding Max Verstappen’s recent penalty, shedding light on what the Red Bull driver should have done differently. Verstappen’s 2025 season has kicked off with mixed results, landing him in third place in the drivers’ standings after the first triple-header of the year.

The Dutchman clinched a victory at the Japanese GP but faced setbacks with a P6 finish in Bahrain and a P2 result in Saudi Arabia. During the Saudi Arabian GP, Verstappen incurred a five-second penalty for an on-track incident with Oscar Piastri’s McLaren at Turn 1, resulting in him losing the lead.

Schumacher, speaking on a Sky Sports Germany F1 podcast, critiqued Verstappen’s actions, pinpointing his acceleration after the incident as the root cause of the penalty. The former racer highlighted that Verstappen could have avoided the penalty by showing restraint and not capitalizing on the situation to gain an advantage.

While acknowledging that Piastri did not leave much room, Schumacher emphasized that Verstappen’s early acceleration was the decisive factor leading to the penalty. Had Verstappen exercised more caution, the situation could have resulted in a different outcome without the need for a penalty.

Schumacher’s analysis delves deep into the racing dynamics between Verstappen and Piastri, underlining the importance of fair play and strategic driving on the track. With F1 fans and experts divided on the penalty decision, Schumacher’s insights offer a fresh perspective on the incident and the implications for future races.

As the F1 season unfolds, the Verstappen-Red Bull saga continues to captivate audiences worldwide, adding an extra layer of intrigue to an already electrifying championship battle. Stay tuned for more updates and analysis on the unfolding drama in the world of Formula 1.
