Title: Max Verstappen’s Bold Number Change: Could #3 or Even #69 Be in His Future?

In a stunning revelation during a recent press conference, Formula 1 superstar Max Verstappen has ignited a whirlwind of speculation about his potential racing number for the 2026 season. As the reigning champion faces the daunting prospect of losing his title as early as this weekend in Las Vegas, he approached the topic with a light-hearted touch, indicating that a change might be on the horizon.

What’s fueling this discussion? The possibility that Verstappen, currently recognized as the driver with the coveted #1, may have to relinquish it could lead him to rethink his racing identity. He teased that his preferred number is actually #3 — a choice with a nostalgic tie to past teammate Daniel Ricciardo, who previously held that number. “I’ll think about it over the winter, but my favorite number is 3. We just need to see if it’s actually possible,” Verstappen revealed, leaving fans buzzing with curiosity.

Verstappen’s history with the number #33, which he adopted when he entered Formula 1 in 2015, was initially due to #3 being occupied by Ricciardo. However, under the FIA’s regulations, Ricciardo retains the rights to that number until the end of 2026, following his departure from the sport. This raises questions about whether Verstappen could reclaim it or if he needs to look elsewhere.

But wait, the plot thickens! The FIA is reportedly open to revising its longstanding rule that restricts drivers from changing their numbers throughout their careers. A spokesperson hinted at potential changes, stating, “Discussions have taken place regarding modifications to the permanent racing numbers rule, established in the 2014 season. A proposal will soon be made to allow drivers to switch numbers during their careers.” This could pave the way for Verstappen to make a bold move.

And if that wasn’t enough, Verstappen also threw a comedic curveball into the mix: the number #69. He chuckled as he recounted his father’s disapproval of the idea, saying, “In reality, I wanted the number 69, but my dad told me it wasn’t a good idea. But that number looks the same, no matter how you view the car. #69 would be fantastic for photos and marketing too! It doesn’t matter how you wear it; it always stays 69.” He also mused about #27, but noted that it’s already claimed by his fellow driver Nico Hülkenberg.

As fans eagerly await the 2026 season, Verstappen’s playful banter has added an exciting layer to the narrative surrounding his future. The combination of nostalgia, potential rule changes, and a dash of humor leaves us all wondering: what number will Max Verstappen ultimately choose? The anticipation is palpable, and one thing is for sure – whatever he decides, it’s bound to be a spectacle both on and off the track!
