Verstappen’s Greatest Season? Sergio Perez Calls 2024 ‘Remarkable’ as Dutchman Clinches Fourth Title

Max Verstappen cemented his place among Formula 1’s elite by securing his fourth Drivers’ Championship at the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix, a season his teammate Sergio Perez has labeled as the Dutchman’s “best season ever.” Despite significant challenges, Verstappen displayed exceptional resilience and skill, holding off stiff competition from a surging McLaren and Ferrari to retain his crown.

Fighting for Glory Amid Adversity

Unlike his dominant 2023 campaign, Verstappen faced a turbulent 2024 season. Red Bull’s midseason development struggles allowed rivals like Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc to close the gap, forcing Verstappen to battle harder than ever. His 130-day winless streak ended only at the Brazilian GP, but his ability to stay ahead in the standings underscored his determination.

Perez, who has struggled significantly in comparison, was full of admiration for Verstappen’s performance:
“As for Max, I think this has been his best season ever,” Perez told the media. “The way he pushed the team, the car, and how hard he worked throughout the year was remarkable.”

Perez highlighted Verstappen’s growth in areas beyond raw speed:
“Max has made significant strides not just with his talent and speed, which have always been there, but also in how he reads the races, collaborates with the team, and drives improvements. That’s been the biggest step forward for him in recent years.”

Perez’s Struggles and Uncertain Future

While Verstappen thrived, Sergio Perez endured a nightmare season, failing to reach the podium since April and scoring just 67 points since August’s Dutch GP. The 34-year-old has come under scrutiny, with Red Bull reportedly exploring alternatives for 2025, including Franco Colapinto, Liam Lawson, Yuki Tsunoda, and Daniel Ricciardo.

Despite the mounting pressure, Perez remains optimistic about his future with Red Bull:
“The team knows exactly where we are in terms of performance, challenges, and difficulties,” he said. “There’s a reason they extended my contract during the year. Internally, we are fully aware of the situation, and we’re working hard to ensure we come back stronger.”

Verstappen’s 2024 Legacy

Verstappen’s ability to adapt to a challenging car, guide Red Bull through its struggles, and fend off a resurgent McLaren and Ferrari makes his 2024 title one of his most impressive yet. As Perez put it, his contributions went beyond his raw talent:
“There were a lot of periods where things looked really far off, and he still managed to push the team in every area.”

What’s Next for Red Bull?

As Red Bull looks to rebuild its dominance in 2025, Verstappen’s consistency and leadership will remain the team’s cornerstone. For Perez, the upcoming season will be a critical test of his ability to bounce back and prove his worth amid the swirling rumors of a replacement.

One thing is clear: while Verstappen celebrates another title, Red Bull’s focus will be on strengthening its lineup and regaining its technical edge as the sport enters another competitive chapter.
