With Max Verstappen holding a slim 52-point lead over Lando Norris in the 2024 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship, the battle is heating up, and former F1 champion Damon Hill has weighed in on the title fight dynamics. Verstappen, despite securing seven race victories this season, hasn’t stood on the top step of the podium in eight consecutive rounds, while Norris, boasting three wins and driving what many consider the best car on the grid, is quickly closing the gap.
Speaking on the F1 Explains podcast, Hill expressed his preference for being in Verstappen’s shoes, leading the championship, rather than chasing it like Norris. “It’s better to have the advantage and protect it,” Hill said. He emphasized the psychological advantage of holding a points lead, even if it comes with increased pressure. According to Hill, having a lead allows a driver to play more defensively, while chasing forces you to take more risks. “Max has got it all to lose,” Hill added, comparing the situation to his own experience in 1996 when his championship lead began to shrink toward the end of the season.
While Verstappen remains at the top with 331 points, Norris is steadily closing the gap with 279 points and six races left in the season. McLaren’s resurgence, particularly with their superior car balance, has given Norris the tools he needs to mount a serious challenge for the title. However, Hill stressed the importance of Verstappen maintaining his composure and not allowing the pressure to rattle him.
Hill also highlighted the tactical approach required in such a close title race. He noted that drivers must consider the broader championship picture when making decisions during races, especially if there’s a risk of crashing out or failing to score points. “There’s a tactical consideration, but you should never be thinking about the championship and trying to calculate the points when you’re racing,” Hill explained. He emphasized the importance of keeping focus on individual race results while recognizing when it might be smarter to settle for second place to protect a championship lead.
Norris, on the other hand, must take a more aggressive approach. With his 52-point deficit, he needs to win races to keep his title hopes alive. Verstappen, though slightly more comfortable, cannot afford to be complacent, especially with Red Bull needing to resolve its car balance issues to keep their title defense on track.
As the 2024 season draws to a close, the pressure is mounting on both drivers. For Norris, every race is a must-win scenario, while Verstappen must find a way to hold onto his lead in what could be a thrilling showdown for the championship.
