Verstappen made a triumphant return to victory after being defeated by Norris in the previous race in Miami. However, the Sunday race in Imola was far from easy, a challenge Verstappen has become accustomed to since Red Bull dominated the new Formula 1 regulations in 2022.
By a narrow margin and with the help of Nico Hulkenberg’s slipstream, Verstappen secured pole position. Red Bull also made significant improvements to the car setup from Friday to Saturday.
Although Verstappen initially built a good lead with medium tires during the first stint, he struggled with the hard tires after the pit stop. Norris began to close in, forcing Verstappen to push to the limit to avoid track limit violations, as he had already received a warning from the stewards. Any additional mistake would result in a five-second time penalty.
In the Red Bull race report, the three-time F1 champion stated: “It was a tough race today. I didn’t expect the car to have such good pace at the beginning, which was nice, and we did well with the medium tires.”
“However, when we switched to the hard tires, the handling became more challenging and it was difficult to bring the car to the finish line, as the tires went out of their ideal operating window, resulting in very low grip.”
“During the last ten laps, I had to focus on surviving with the tires and managed to keep Lando behind me, but it required intense concentration due to the penalty we were already facing. However, we persevered and secured the victory.”
“I was definitely counting down the laps until the end, and it was an incredible feeling when we crossed the finish line!” revealed the Dutch driver.
“Considering where we started the weekend, this result is extremely satisfying. There is work to be done and aspects to be analyzed, but we are looking forward to the next race in Monaco,” Verstappen concluded.
On the other hand, Sergio Perez faced difficulties in qualifying and started the race in 11th position. He ended up finishing in eighth place at the Emilia Romagna GP.
The Mexican acknowledged that it would be a tough task to correct the situation in the race, stating: “We knew today would be a tough day, as the whole weekend was compromised since qualifying.”
“Imola presents challenges for overtaking, so this was the best we could achieve today. Additionally, we encountered traffic issues during my first stint and had little room to adjust the balance with the hard tires.”
“We knew McLaren had the advantage, but Max showed exceptional performance throughout the weekend,” praised the Mexican, “so credit goes to him. This result is a significant achievement for us.”
“We have some aspects to analyze and improvements to be made as we approach the next race. However, I am looking forward to Monaco and hope we can maintain our strong season and regain positive momentum,” Perez concluded.
The Red Bull team principal, Christian Horner, commented: “It is immensely gratifying to win a race like this, especially when facing such fierce competition.”
“McLaren and Ferrari have shown impressive speed, and the battle with both teams will certainly be intense, especially as the cars are getting closer due to stable regulations.”
“Overall, the weekend in Imola will be remembered, and the whole team is looking forward to the next race in Monte Carlo,” concluded the British team principal.
Verstappen remains in the lead of the F1 Drivers’ Championship, while Perez has dropped from second to third place, with Charles Leclerc now in second place. Red Bull continues to lead the Constructors’ Championship.
