Verstappen Overjoyed After Sprint Qualifying Pole in Austin: ‘It’s Been a While!’

Max Verstappen has broken a frustrating pole position drought by topping the Sprint Qualifying at the 2024 United States Grand Prix. The Dutchman, who hadn’t secured pole since the Austrian Grand Prix earlier this season, delivered a stellar lap to place himself at the front of the grid for the Sprint race. His relief was evident as he expressed confidence in Red Bull’s improvements after recent struggles, including a tough second-place finish at the Singapore GP.

Heading into the weekend, Red Bull knew the Circuit of the Americas would suit their RB20 much better than Singapore’s tight, twisty layout. The fast, high-speed corners and long straights of the Austin track played to Red Bull’s strengths, and the team didn’t disappoint. Verstappen capitalized on these strengths, stating that the car performed exceptionally well throughout the day.

“I think we had a good day,” said Verstappen, reflecting on the Sprint Qualifying session. “Sprint qualifying is always tricky, especially when it comes to tire strategies, but we managed it well. I’m happy with today.”

Red Bull’s decision to run a medium-medium-soft tire strategy paid off handsomely as Verstappen posted the fastest lap, putting him ahead of fierce rivals including George Russell and Lando Norris. With Red Bull previously struggling to secure pole positions in recent races, this return to the top spot has bolstered Verstappen’s confidence in the team’s progress.

“The whole day the car was working quite well,” Verstappen said, satisfied with the car’s performance. “Very happy to be first, it’s been a while, so very pleased with today.”

Despite his excitement, Verstappen remained grounded, acknowledging that the Sprint race is important but the real prize lies in Sunday’s main event. While eager to perform well in the Sprint, the Dutchman made it clear that the ultimate goal is to secure maximum points in the Grand Prix.

“Our goal is to make the car more drivable and good on the tires for the race,” Verstappen said. “We’ll do the best we can tomorrow in the Sprint, but the most points are awarded on Sunday, so that’s our main focus.”

With a 52-point lead over Lando Norris in the drivers’ standings, Verstappen knows that every point counts in these final stages of the season. As Red Bull aims to reclaim the constructors’ lead and solidify Verstappen’s championship bid, the stakes have never been higher.

If Red Bull can maintain this form, they look set to finish the season strong. However, as Verstappen knows too well, the RB20’s past unpredictability means nothing can be taken for granted.

The Sprint race, set to take place on Saturday, will give Red Bull another chance to flex their muscles, but all eyes will be on Sunday’s showdown where the biggest points haul is up for grabs.
