Verstappen commented that Norris would need a “big reflector” after almost colliding at the start of the race in Spain. Max Verstappen joked that Lando Norris needs a “substantial mirror” due to the incident at the beginning, where he was pushed onto the grass at the Spanish Formula 1 Grand Prix. Verstappen executed a better start than Norris, who was in pole position, allowing Verstappen to position himself alongside the McLaren driver. Norris then moved and made contact with his competitors, pushing them to the inside. The Dutch driver maintained his speed and took the inside line at turn 1, overtaking Norris. However, George Russell took advantage of the situation and passed both of them. However, Verstappen quickly overtook the Mercedes driver two laps later and opened up a significant lead, preventing Norris from making a later recovery in the race. When asked about his perspective on the minor collision, which the stewards decided not to investigate, Norris argued that he had given enough space to Verstappen. “It’s always difficult to judge in that situation,” Norris said. “I can’t measure it perfectly with a tape measure. So, I’m not going to make it easy for him, but I believe there was enough space. I think it was just a racing incident. I gave enough space. I don’t think there was a moment where there wasn’t enough space for him to stay on the track.” Verstappen expressed his frustration with Norris’ aggressive position at that moment, but after the race, he admitted that he also moved to avoid potential damage. “I think I already know what his birthday present will be. It will be a big mirror or some glasses, and everything will be fine!” Verstappen commented. “It’s all good. No, listen, I mean, it’s an intense race for sure. If we reversed roles, would I have done the same thing? Probably. No, listen, you always try to push to the limit. I also wanted to avoid any potential contact because you don’t want to touch wheels and potentially damage your suspension. So, naturally, you leave a few extra centimeters. And those extra centimeters meant that I had to go a bit onto the grass. And luckily, nothing happened. So, it’s all good. We still had a good race up until turn 1.” Norris lamented losing ground to Verstappen at the start, but he made an impressive recovery in the final laps of the race, reducing the gap to Verstappen to just 2.2 seconds at the end. The British driver believed he missed an opportunity to secure his second career victory with the faster car, but his sixth podium finish of the season moved him into second place in the standings.
