Max Verstappen, the race winner, celebrated in the parc ferme after the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix of the Formula 1 World Championship in Imola, Italy, on May 19, 2024. Verstappen successfully converted his pole position into a victory, despite the late challenge from Lando Norris. Charles Leclerc finished third in the race.
Before the race started, changes to Fernando Alonso’s suspension resulted in his Aston Martin being moved to the pitlane, leaving a vacant spot at the back of the grid. Due to the narrow track in Imola and the planned strategy of only one pit stop, overtaking opportunities were limited, making a good start crucial for the race outcome.
The top 10 drivers opted for the Medium compound for their tires, while Sergio Perez, Zhou Guanyu, and Logan Sargeant chose the Hards. Verstappen and Norris had a fierce battle at the start, but Verstappen ended up pulling away in the race by turn 2. Leclerc had a slow start, allowing Carlos Sainz to challenge him. However, Leclerc managed to defend his position, while Norris protected his second place by overtaking Leclerc.
Lewis Hamilton managed to overtake Yuki Tsunoda early in the race, with both Red Bull drivers dropping two positions. Nico Hulkenberg made progress in his Haas car, moving up to eighth place, while Perez also entered the points zone.
Verstappen quickly established a two-second lead over Norris, with Sainz and Piastri closely following Leclerc. Alonso took a risk by starting on Soft tires but switched to the Hards after seven laps. Bottas and Albon also changed their tire choices for greater durability. Unfortunately, Albon had an issue with a loose wheel and had to return to the pit lane, allowing the leaders to overtake him.
Although Albon managed to stay in last place after a pit stop, Piastri tried to overtake Sainz for fourth place. Ricciardo fell behind Perez and made a pit stop on the 11th lap to switch to Hard tires. Tsunoda and Haas responded with their own stops, but Tsunoda’s quick tire change allowed him to return ahead of the Haas driver.
Despite Verstappen’s uncertain race prospects due to his struggles in practice, he continued to increase his lead and created a five-second gap between him and the chasing pack.
In the world of Formula 1, Red Bull’s Sergio Perez was struggling to reach the leaders. A mistake at the first corner of Rivazza caused him to lose five seconds by going off track. Meanwhile, Mercedes’ George Russell decided to make an early pit stop on lap 21, with a quick 2.4-second service from his team. This put him behind Esteban Ocon on track.
Another driver, Yuki Tsunoda, also made an early stop, giving him an advantage over Nico Hulkenberg. However, Tsunoda found himself struggling to overtake Logan Sargeant and gain more positions. McLaren had a strategy to avoid their driver Lando Norris’ pit stop in order to prevent Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc from gaining an advantage. But Norris ended up having to pit on lap 22, putting him behind Red Bull’s Perez.
Fortunately for Norris, he was able to quickly overtake Perez and regain his position among the top five. McLaren then decided to pit their other driver, Oscar Piastri, on the following lap. Both McLaren drivers were setting impressive lap times, while Ferrari chose to stay out on track and took the lead when Max Verstappen made his pit stop.
Realizing the strong pace set by Norris and Piastri, Ferrari made a pit stop for Leclerc on lap 25. However, Leclerc came out behind Norris and Perez, in sixth place. Just like Norris early in the race, Perez couldn’t keep up with Ferrari’s performance on newer tires, allowing Leclerc to make a crucial overtake.
A mistake by Perez at Tamburello gave Piastri the opportunity to position his car on the inside line and overtake him at the Villeneuve chicane. Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz made his expected pit stop and lost position to McLaren. Lewis Hamilton also had a lock-up and went through the gravel at Acque Minerali.
Tsunoda, who was stuck behind Sargeant, made a bold move on the outside at turn 2 to overtake him. Hulkenberg followed suit a few corners later at Villeneuve. As for the battle for the podium, Sainz managed to overtake Perez on the inside at Tamburello on lap 30. However, he found himself six seconds behind Piastri.
Russell joined the fight by overtaking Perez at the braking zone of turn 2, moving up to sixth place. Tsunoda continued his impressive recovery, passing Zhou’s Sauber at Tamburello. Hulkenberg made sure Tsunoda couldn’t relax his pace, overtaking Zhou as well, now just two seconds behind the Red Bull driver in 12th place.
Perez’s struggles continued when Hamilton overtook him at Tamburello on lap 37. This led Red Bull to bring him into the pits and switch to Medium tires. Despite losing his initial position to Daniel Ricciardo, Perez wasted no time in reclaiming it at turn 2, putting himself back in the top ten.
In tabloid format, the next target on Perez’s radar was Hulkenberg’s Haas car, and the experienced German driver couldn’t prevent the Red Bull car from easily overtaking him with the help of DRS as they entered Tamburello.
Norris received a message over the radio informing him that Leclerc was pushing to increase the pressure on him. Norris had previously expressed concerns about the lack of speed in the McLaren car.
Tsunoda managed to create some distance between himself and the Haas car of Hulkenberg, but couldn’t resist Perez, while Leclerc was closing in on Norris, staying less than a second behind him to take advantage of the DRS.
Hulkenberg’s pace, after his earlier pit stop, was slowing down, and Lance Stroll gave a much-needed boost to Aston Martin by overtaking the Haas driver.
Despite his efforts, Leclerc didn’t find an opportunity to overtake Norris, and a moment when he ran wide at Variante Alta cost him two seconds, pushing him further back.
Verstappen was comfortably leading the race, but Norris was starting to close the gap between them. Verstappen revealed that he was struggling with the Hard compound tires.
Mercedes was preparing for a late pit stop, and Russell was the first to make a second stop, putting him one position behind Hamilton.
Verstappen was dealing with some handling issues, and Norris, who had left Leclerc behind, was rapidly catching up to him.
As Norris was closing in to potentially overtake Verstappen, the Dutch driver increased his pace to keep the McLaren at bay.
However, Verstappen was still struggling with car issues, and Norris was gradually closing in until a mistake at the Villeneuve chicane prevented him from using the DRS.
Verstappen had to work hard in the final laps, but managed to stay ahead of Norris and crossed the finish line to secure his third consecutive victory at Imola.
Despite Norris’ pressure, he had to settle for second place on the podium, finishing 0.7 seconds behind the current three-time world champion.
Leclerc finished over seven seconds behind the top two drivers in third place, ensuring that Ferrari was represented on the podium. Piastri finished between the two Ferrari cars.
Hamilton and Russell had a distant seventh and eighth place in the Mercedes cars, while Perez dropped to eighth place after initially holding the second position in the race.
After overtaking Hulkenberg and Tsunoda in the final stages of the race, Stroll secured ninth place, beating the Red Bull driver.
