Max Verstappen, the reigning Formula 1 world champion, expressed frustration after qualifying fifth for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Despite briefly holding provisional pole, balance inconsistencies and struggles with the RB20’s setup left him unable to contend with the dominant McLaren duo of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, who locked out the front row.
A Rollercoaster Session for Verstappen
Verstappen’s initial Q3 lap of 1:22.945s put him ahead of the McLarens and showcased Red Bull’s ability to adapt under pressure. However, a heart-stopping moment at the final corner nearly derailed his lap.
“I thought at one point I was facing the wall,” Verstappen recalled. “It was a bit spicy, but of course, not quick.”
While Norris and Piastri improved on their second runs, Verstappen couldn’t replicate his earlier pace. He was subsequently demoted to fifth by Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari and Nico Hulkenberg’s Haas.
Balance Problems Plague Red Bull
Throughout the weekend, Verstappen struggled with understeer and shifting balance, making it difficult to extract consistent performance from the RB20.
“We’ve never found that sweet spot this weekend,” Verstappen admitted. “The balance shifts between corners, so when you try to fix one issue, something else crops up.”
The Yas Marina Circuit’s tight third sector further exposed Red Bull’s limitations in slow-speed corners, a persistent Achilles’ heel throughout the season.
“Slow-speed corners have been our weakness,” Verstappen said. “We’ve made some improvements, but there’s still work to do.”
McLaren’s Dominance Unchallenged
Verstappen conceded that challenging McLaren for victory in Sunday’s race would be a tall order. Norris and Piastri’s consistent pace throughout the weekend has left Red Bull on the back foot.
“They’re comfortably quick with both drivers,” Verstappen acknowledged. “Unlike Qatar, where we hung in there, this time we’re further behind.”
Targeting the Podium
Despite his struggles, Verstappen remains hopeful of battling Carlos Sainz for the final podium spot. With Ferrari showing solid form, Verstappen anticipates a challenging but manageable fight in the race.
“I hope I can race with Carlos,” Verstappen said. “We’ll see how it goes, but Ferrari looks strong.”
Verstappen also noted the potential for a spicy midfield battle around him, with Nico Hulkenberg and George Russell adding intrigue to the opening laps.
“There’s a battle brewing for P6 next to me, so Lap 1 should be interesting,” he previewed.
Red Bull’s Race Strategy: Manage Tyres, Maximize Balance
Verstappen highlighted tyre management as a key factor in the race but stressed that Red Bull would need a well-balanced car to capitalize.
“You need a good balance to go with tyre management,” he said. “Hopefully, we have that for the race.”
A Challenging Season Finale
As the curtain falls on the 2024 season, Verstappen is aiming to close the year with a strong showing despite Red Bull’s struggles. While McLaren appears out of reach, the Dutchman is ready to fight for every opportunity in Abu Dhabi’s high-stakes finale.
