As the Formula 1 2025 season prepares to launch, concerns rise over the potential performance of Red Bull Racing’s latest machine, the RB21, and its potential impact on the team’s star driver, Max Verstappen. Guenther Steiner, Red Bull’s former technical operations director and ex-Haas team boss, has sounded the alarm suggesting the Dutch racing superstar may become a challenge to handle if the new car doesn’t deliver as expected.

In a recent statement, Pierre Wache, Red Bull’s technical director, openly acknowledged that the RB21 didn’t perform to the team’s expectations during the Bahrain test runs. The car’s unanticipated responses may require significant work before the upcoming Australian Grand Prix, the season’s inaugural race.

The RB21’s underwhelming performance follows a difficult latter half of the 2024 season for Red Bull. Despite a promising start, balance issues in their RB20 resulted in a 10-race winless stretch. Nevertheless, Verstappen demonstrated his racing prowess by holding off McLaren’s Lando Norris and securing his fourth consecutive World Championship title.

However, due to the team’s performance issues, Red Bull dropped from the Constructors’ summit to third place. The RB21, the first Red Bull vehicle not designed under the guidance of F1 design icon Adrian Newey since the RB2, is tasked with reversing this downturn.

Yet, the Bahrain tests indicated there might be a challenging road ahead. Wache confessed the team’s dissatisfaction with the RB21’s performance but remained optimistic that it’s heading in the right direction, although perhaps not as rapidly as anticipated.

In an interview with CNN, Steiner speculated on Verstappen’s potential reaction should the 2025 season start unfavorably. He recalled the driver’s aggressive response when he began to lose races the previous year before adopting a smarter strategy to accumulate points despite not winning.

Steiner warned, “If he hasn’t got a good car where he can win, he will get very difficult to manage… because he will be vocal about it that he’s not happy. And an unhappy Max is not a nice Max, as we all know.”

Despite these concerns, Steiner recognized Verstappen’s exceptional talent, dubbing him the best current driver. He believes Verstappen will exert every effort to secure another championship win. However, he cautioned that it wouldn’t be an easy task, as last year’s difficulties demonstrated.

Steiner further advised Verstappen and Red Bull to remain patient and work hard if initial races don’t go as planned, emphasizing that complaining doesn’t help team morale or competitiveness. He suggested that the team needs to see where they stand initially before deciding on the path forward.

As Verstappen gears up for the pursuit of his fifth consecutive World Championship, he will be joined by a new teammate, Liam Lawson, who steps up from Racing Bulls following Sergio Perez’s departure. As the F1 2025 season approaches, all eyes will undoubtedly be on Red Bull and Verstappen to see how they navigate these challenges.
