Verstappen executed a bold race strategy in contrast to McLaren to secure victory in the Spanish Grand Prix. Max Verstappen revealed that the Spanish Grand Prix demonstrated that Red Bull no longer has an advantage over its Formula 1 competitors when it comes to tire degradation at the end of laps. Red Bull’s dominance under the current ground effect regulations seemed to be fading in recent weeks, as both Ferrari and McLaren secured victories over the reigning champions. However, while Red Bull lived up to expectations by establishing themselves as the leading team on a traditional circuit in Barcelona, Verstappen was fortunate to come out on top. Lando Norris overtook Verstappen in qualifying, but the latter made a better start and kept the inside line to pass his rival, although he temporarily lost the lead to George Russell. However, Verstappen managed to overtake Russell on lap 3 and opened up a nine-second gap, which proved insurmountable for Norris, who finished 2.2 seconds behind. “In terms of overall performance, we had a good race,” evaluated Verstappen. “We made every effort to maximize our performance, but I believe we had a bit of difficulty with the ideal pace, lacking a bit of tire degradation at the end of each lap. So it wasn’t an easy and straightforward race. Lando was closing in quickly at the end, but fortunately, it worked out well enough.” Verstappen reiterated his previous comments about expecting a fierce battle in Spain due to McLaren’s recent pace. The three-time Formula 1 champion stated that McLaren introduced more impactful upgrades than Red Bull this season and urged his team to regain their momentum. For one year, because I think in 2022 we weren’t the fastest,” commented Verstappen on the narrative that Red Bull usually dominates in Spain. “Ferrari was the fastest. And last year, I think we were quite competitive, but I believe Mercedes was really strong at that time. So, it’s been good for us, but nothing particularly extraordinary. So, I always knew it would be a very tight competition, and McLaren is doing an excellent job. They have implemented several significant upgrades to their car, and it seems to be working very well. And on our side, we made adjustments to the car, but maybe not as much in terms of lap time compared to what the others did. So now, it is our responsibility to find a bit more and fight to regain that small advantage. Because today it became clear that we lacked a bit in terms of absolute pace.” The Dutch driver also revealed that Red Bull’s previous advantage of being faster than their rivals when tire wear became a factor in races has now been debunked. “Furthermore, when we needed to accelerate, we simply couldn’t preserve the tires like Lando, for example, could,” he added. These types of factors are quite crucial on most tracks where there is some degree of tire degradation.” With Mercedes making continuous progress, Verstappen emphasized the importance of Red Bull focusing on their own competitiveness rather than the advances made by their competitors. “It all depends on what the other teams bring to their cars,” evaluated Verstappen. “I have no knowledge of their current activities. The only aspect I have control over is our team and what we bring to the table. That’s where my focus is. Naturally, one can fantasize about potential improvements from other teams, but that’s simply a waste of energy. So I am fully occupied with optimizing our package and seeking to improve it. I am involved in extensive discussions with the engineers to find solutions in order to maintain our leading position.”
