Verstappen Contemplates Lawson’s Performance, Suggests Red Bull Car is ‘Extremely Tough’ to Maximize

In the high-octane world of Formula 1, reigning World Champion Max Verstappen has sparked speculation with a somewhat enigmatic response to questions about the performance of his Red Bull teammate, Liam Lawson. Verstappen, who will start from the second row at the Chinese Grand Prix, hinted that Lawson might fare better with Racing Bulls, Red Bull’s sister team, due to its broader operating scope.

During a series of interviews, Verstappen intriguingly suggested that Racing Bulls was “very close” to him, a comment that left observers wondering if he was referring to the team’s performance or their proximity to his own pace. The Dutch driver further hinted that Lawson might achieve higher speeds with Racing Bulls, given the challenging nature of the Red Bull car.

Lawson, who is new to the Red Bull team, has had a rocky start with two P20 placings in both the Sprint and Grand Prix qualifiers in China, following a disappointing exit in Q1 in Australia. Despite the challenging circumstances, including never having previously raced on either circuit and limited running time, Lawson acknowledged his performance in Shanghai left much room for improvement.

Verstappen’s intriguing remarks were shared via Sky Sports F1’s social media accounts, with his comments being labelled as ‘cryptic’. When quizzed about Racing Bulls’ performance, Verstappen responded, “I mean, they’re doing very well, they’re very close to me,” adding with a raised eyebrow, “Maybe that also says something, but yeah, I don’t know.”

The ambiguity of his comments left many pondering whether Verstappen was hinting at the relative performance of Lawson, or if he was pointing to the unexpected competitiveness of Racing Bulls.

Further shedding light on the matter to Dutch media, Verstappen highlighted that the performance gap between drivers from other teams was narrower, indicating the demanding nature of the Red Bull car. He underscored his belief that Lawson would potentially be faster with Racing Bulls, concluding, “That car is easier to drive than ours.”

Verstappen’s remarks have added another layer of intrigue to the world of Formula 1, leaving fans and analysts alike to decipher the true meaning behind his cryptic comments. As the reigning World Champion, his insights offer a fascinating glimpse into the competitive dynamics within the Red Bull team and its sister squad, Racing Bulls. As Lawson continues to navigate the challenging learning curve of his new team, Verstappen’s comments will certainly fuel further speculation and discussion.
