Red Bull’s Performance Woes Continue: Max Verstappen Comments on F1’s Dominant ‘Orange’ Team in 2025 Season

Despite his commendable streak of winning four consecutive Drivers’ Championships, Max Verstappen, the Red Bull F1 team’s lead driver, has expressed uncertainty about the performance of their RB21 car in the upcoming 2025 season. As the racing fraternity heads to Melbourne, Verstappen has acknowledged that only the racetrack will reveal if the issues that plagued their car in 2024 have been resolved.

Last season saw the McLaren car outpacing Red Bull, establishing itself as the fastest vehicle on track. Early indications from pre-season testing suggest that this could very well be the case again this year. Red Bull’s motorsport advisor, Helmut Marko, has conceded that McLaren’s MCL39 seems to be “two to three-tenths” faster than the RB21, boasting superior tyre wear to boot.

Despite this, Verstappen appears to be somewhat optimistic. While he refrains from quantifying the gap, he asserts that Red Bull’s RB21 is in a “positive shape,” marking an improvement over the previous year’s model. However, he acknowledges there are still areas that need work, as highlighted by the Bahrain test where Red Bull’s speed fell short.

Speaking to the media in Melbourne, Verstappen remained pragmatic about the team’s prospects, “It’s impossible to know at the moment. We are not the quickest right now, but Formula 1 is an unpredictable beast. Last season ended differently than it began, so I remain hopeful.”

Verstappen’s career trajectory has been impressive, to say the least. After a nail-biting battle with Lewis Hamilton, he clinched his first World title in 2021. His title defences in 2022 and 2023 were near flawless, with 15 and 19 wins out of 22 races, respectively. The 2024 season proved more challenging, but Verstappen still emerged victorious with nine wins under his belt.

However, racing pundits and fans alike predict a fierce battle for the 2025 title, expecting the contest to go right down to the wire. When questioned about his strategy for this year’s title defence, Verstappen revealed a relaxed approach, “I don’t dwell on it. I trust my team, work hard on and off the track, and always strive to excel. My focus is on addressing any issues with the car, minimising mistakes, and consistently scoring points.”

When probed on the difficulty of this year’s defence, Verstappen shrugged it off, “I don’t think about it. There’s no reason to think about that.” In response to the concern about McLaren’s pace in Melbourne, he simply responded, “Exactly that.”

As the anticipation around the new racing season builds, Verstappen’s comments underline the unpredictable nature of Formula 1. It remains to be seen how Red Bull’s RB21 will perform on the track and whether Verstappen can uphold his winning streak in the face of formidable competition. Regardless of the outcome, the 2025 season promises to be a thrilling ride.
