Max Verstappen lost first place in the Grand Prix of Spain qualifying, as Lando Norris beat him by just 0.020 seconds. Verstappen believes that Red Bull’s decision to use a more loaded wing configuration contributed to the loss of pole position. It was expected that Red Bull would perform well on a conventional circuit, but Verstappen’s choice of a stabilizing rear wing ended up costing him. Despite this setback, Verstappen was relieved to have overcome previous training problems and felt that the car performed much better in qualifying. However, he acknowledged that the high-speed sections of the track, which were comfortably flat, limited his ability to improve his time. Verstappen also noted that the car was unstable throughout the weekend but finally felt connected in qualifying. He explained that as the conditions became cooler, certain corners became flat, resulting in a drag performance.
However, despite making adjustments to his RB20, Verstappen acknowledges that Red Bull’s recent defeat highlights the need for more significant upgrades. He admits that his performance has been satisfactory but not up to par, especially on tracks where he expected to be ahead. Other teams have been closing in, which has made it more challenging for Red Bull. To secure first place, Verstappen emphasizes the importance of perfection and improving the car’s performance.
Verstappen dismisses the idea that McLaren’s progress should serve as a warning to Red Bull. He states that they are already aware of their competitors’ advancements and are fully attentive to the situation. However, he acknowledges the need to strive harder and accelerate the development of new parts. The domination they enjoyed last year has disappeared and they must make an effort to regain their advantage.
Although Verstappen is uncertain about Red Bull’s long-term pace compared to their rivals, he believes tire management will play a crucial role. His main goal is to win the next race, but he admits that the true pace of all teams in long races is still unknown. He expects fierce competition, similar to previous races, and emphasizes the importance of preserving the tires due to high tire degradation on this circuit. Furthermore, the condition of the track, including the possibility of rain overnight and in the morning, adds another layer of uncertainty to the equation.
