Verstappen apologizes to Piastri but Questions FIA Penalty: ‘It’s Just Unfortunate’

Max Verstappen ended the 2024 season with a rare misstep after a first-corner collision with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. While the reigning world champion apologized to Piastri, he expressed frustration at the stewards’ decision to hand him a 10-second penalty for causing the incident.

The Incident: A Risk Gone Wrong

Starting from third, Verstappen got a strong launch and overtook Carlos Sainz before diving down the inside of Piastri under braking for Turn 1. The move went awry as Verstappen, unable to fully clear the McLaren, clipped Piastri. Both cars spun, sending Piastri to the back of the field and compromising Verstappen’s own race.

“I committed to the inside, but as soon as I did, I saw the gap closing,” Verstappen explained. “I tried to back out because I didn’t want to crash with Oscar, but we still touched. It’s really unfortunate, especially with him — he’s a great guy.”

A Penalty That Didn’t Sit Well

The stewards deemed Verstappen responsible for the collision, issuing a 10-second time penalty. Verstappen, however, appeared unconvinced by the decision.

“I don’t want to talk too much about it. I’m just happy the season is over,” Verstappen said. “For me, the most important thing was apologizing to Oscar. I’ve got nothing to gain or lose at this stage of the season. It didn’t work out, but I didn’t want to leave any bad feelings with him going into the break.”

The Dutchman didn’t hide his skepticism about the penalty:
“I don’t understand anything anymore. I was expecting maybe 20 seconds, 30 seconds, or even a stop-and-go! It’s all confusing, but I’m not going to waste my time getting angry about it.”

A Lesson in Friendship and Racing

Verstappen, who shares a good relationship with Piastri, emphasized the importance of resolving the situation quickly to avoid lingering tensions.
“He’s a friend of mine, and I don’t want anything weird between us,” Verstappen said. “It’s not nice for either of us to end the season like that. I apologized, and that’s what mattered most to me.”

Looking Ahead

Verstappen acknowledged that the incident served as a reminder of the split-second decisions required in high-stakes racing.
“When you’re in that position, you’re focusing on the car ahead and you commit. I expected he might not see me there, and I tried to get out of it, but we still clipped. It’s on me.”

The Dutchman’s willingness to apologize reflects his maturity as a driver, even as he continues to question the FIA’s decision-making process. With the 2024 season now behind him, Verstappen looks forward to a break, saying, “It’s been a long year, and I’m ready to recharge.”

Season Finale Takeaways

The collision may have marred Verstappen’s final race of the season, but it also highlighted the camaraderie and sportsmanship that still exist in the fiercely competitive world of Formula 1. As both drivers head into the offseason, the incident will likely serve as a footnote in a season that further cemented Verstappen’s legacy—and continued to elevate Piastri’s star in the sport.
