Peugeot confirms that during the final lap of the 1812 km race in Qatar, the Peugeot 9X8 #93 ran out of fuel. Jean-Eric Vergne managed to bring the car back to the pits using electric power, but due to this incident, the car was later disqualified for not complying with parc fermé conditions. Nico Muller, who is Vergne’s teammate along with Mikkel Jensen, expressed his disbelief at the situation, attributing the lack of fuel to a possible issue during the final pit stop. Muller also mentioned the disappointment of not being able to secure a second place, which they believed they deserved. The car had held the second position for a significant part of the race. Muller started in sixth place and managed to reach third place early on, behind Miguel Molina in the Ferrari 499P #50 and Michael Christensen in the Porsche 963 #5 who started on pole position. Muller eventually overtook both cars to take the lead. However, Laurens Vanthoor in the younger brother Porsche #6 moved up to second place and eventually took the lead from Muller after the Swiss driver made a mistake overtaking traffic. The Peugeot #93 remained in second place until the end of the race. Meanwhile, Callum Ilott in the Porsche JOTA #12, who was in third place, was closing in on Vergne in the final laps, while also being chased by Matt Campbell in the Porsche #5. Unfortunately, disaster struck for Peugeot when Vergne seemed to lose power as he crossed the finish line to start the final lap. He managed to bring the car home in seventh place, but as mentioned earlier, the car was later disqualified. Jean-Marc Finot, head of Stellantis Motorsport, praised the performance of the Peugeot TotalEnergies team in the race and highlighted the potential of the car. He acknowledged the refueling issue during the final pit stop and expressed the team’s focus on investigating the issue. Finot also mentioned his excitement for the upcoming race in Imola and his plans to build on the performance of the 2023 version of the PEUGEOT 9X8. The next race in Imola will mark the debut of the new version of the 9X8, which is expected to feature a rear wing and adhere to standardized wheel/tire sizes, in accordance with the Hypercars LMH rules. The 6 Hours of Imola are scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 21.
