The Italian team showed an impressive performance during the pre-season tests last week, completing the second highest number of laps (416) and achieving the fastest lap of the test thanks to Carlos Sainz Jr., who clocked 1:29.921. Charles Leclerc, Sainz’s teammate, also topped the time screens on the final day of testing.
In 2023, Ferrari had a somewhat disappointing year as they trailed behind Mercedes in the later stages of the Championship, finishing third in the Constructors’ Championship. However, they were the only team, apart from Red Bull, to secure a Grand Prix victory last year. This triumph came at the Singapore stage, thanks to a brilliant race strategy executed by Sainz.
With their new car, the SF-24, Ferrari aims to close the gap to Red Bull and regularly compete for podiums and victories in the 2024 season. Despite the expectation of significant driver signings in 2025, team principal Vasseur emphasizes that the team’s complete focus and attention are currently directed towards 2024.
Vasseur expressed satisfaction with the data collected during the pre-season tests and has high hopes for the upcoming season. He stated, “After the SF-24 completed over seven race distances during testing, when all teams ran their own programs, it is now time for everyone to reveal their true capabilities.”
While assessing Ferrari’s pace compared to other teams on the grid is challenging, Vasseur believes the team has managed the factors within their control. He added, “Charles and Carlos felt comfortable behind the wheel of the SF-24, which was our main goal during its design. We face formidable opponents, and I hope we approach the season with the same determination we showed in the latter stages of the previous year.”
Vasseur concluded by emphasizing Ferrari’s determination to climb up the rankings and kick off the 2024 campaign with a positive result. He stated, “We should not hesitate to make bold decisions if we believe they can make a difference in our performance. The car looks competitive, Charles and Carlos are in excellent form, and the team’s focus is unwavering as we seek a good result.” Vasseur referred to Leclerc and Sainz as the two Ferrari drivers in their final season as teammates.
The first race of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship 2024 season will take place on Saturday, March 2nd, at the Bahrain International Circuit. Before the race, there will be FP1 and FP2 on Thursday, followed by FP2 and Qualifying on Friday.
