Ferrari revealed a significant update for their first home race of the season at Imola. Although they showed improvement, it was McLaren that posed a challenge to Red Bull and Max Verstappen, interrupting their usual dominance. McLaren had already implemented their update since Miami, which gave them more data and experience compared to Ferrari. Nevertheless, Ferrari still showed a clear improvement.

During a press conference at Imola, Vasseur was asked about the possibility of a championship battle this year, now that McLaren and Ferrari were closing in on Red Bull. Vasseur acknowledged that there were still 17 races out of the total 24 remaining. He pointed out that last year, at this point in the season, they were 100 points behind Aston Martin, but managed to finish 100 points ahead of them. Vasseur emphasized that the championship is never decided after just seven races and, this season, with the closeness between the teams, it becomes even more unpredictable. With the possibility of six to eight cars capable of winning a race, a single poor performance can drastically change the championship standings. Vasseur stressed the need to focus on each race individually and not worry about the overall championship. There is still plenty of time for things to change.

Verstappen, who was used to winning races with large advantages, managed to finish just seven tenths of a second ahead of Lando Norris, from McLaren. Charles Leclerc, from Ferrari, finished seven seconds behind in third place. When asked if this was good news for Ferrari, Vasseur expressed his satisfaction, not only for Ferrari, but for Formula 1 and the championship as a whole. He highlighted the fact that three teams were within seven seconds after seventy laps, with a difference of less than a tenth of a second per lap. Vasseur acknowledged that McLaren had made similar progress to Ferrari, which caused him mixed feelings. However, he believed that if they had performed better in qualifying, they could have achieved a one-two finish both in qualifying and in the race.

Vasseur concluded by mentioning that they would start from scratch in Monaco, with a different layout and turns. Despite the frustrations, he acknowledged the progress made by both Ferrari and McLaren and remained optimistic about the upcoming races.

In the highly competitive world of Formula 1, the gap between Red Bull, McLaren, and Ferrari has become incredibly narrow. Now, winning races depends not only on the car’s performance, but also on the overall execution of the race weekend. McLaren Team Principal, Andrea Stella, emphasized this point, highlighting the importance of every aspect of the race.

When Vasseur, the Team Principal of McLaren, was informed of Stella’s comments, he acknowledged the fierce competition that exists across the field. He recognized that car setup and driver performance will be crucial in the upcoming race in Monaco. Vasseur emphasized the need for accelerated development, as a small upgrade at the right time can make a significant difference in the standings. However, he also stressed the importance of ensuring that any upgrades are effective, as the margin for improvement has become incredibly small.

Following the race in Imola, Charles Leclerc moved up to second place in the 2024 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship, trailing leader Max Verstappen by 48 points. Ferrari currently holds second place in the Constructors’ Championship, but is significantly 156 points behind Red Bull.
