Ferrari Formula 1 team boss, Frederic Vasseur, denied the idea that the team’s approach to their driver pairing hampers their pursuit of the Drivers’ Championship. Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz have been teammates at Ferrari for four seasons and have proven to be strong competitors during this period. In the past, Ferrari was known for prioritizing Michael Schumacher over his teammates, but in recent years they have treated both drivers equally. This policy will continue when Lewis Hamilton joins the team in 2025. On the other hand, Red Bull has benefited from Max Verstappen’s dominance over Sergio Perez, scoring 290 points more than his teammate in the last season. While having two equally competitive drivers may give Ferrari an advantage over Red Bull, some argue that it may compromise each driver’s individual aspirations. However, Vasseur believes that having two drivers who challenge each other will help Ferrari end their long title drought. He highlights the positive competition between Leclerc and Sainz last year and expects this dynamic to continue in 2024, further driving the team’s improvement.
The Ferrari season got off to a rough start due to an unstable car that was an evolution of their previous model, making it prone to sudden behavioral fluctuations. However, the team managed to recover with a revised car concept, and Vasseur acknowledges the drivers’ contribution to the team’s resurgence. Throughout the season, there has been a positive relationship between the drivers, although it is not necessary for them to be best friends. Vasseur hopes that they prioritize Ferrari’s interests and work together with the right approach and mindset. Their professionalism has played a significant role in the team’s ability to make a comeback. Vasseur admits that if one driver had a considerable advantage over the other, Ferrari’s approach would have to be adjusted. However, the team has always had a clear strategy of providing both drivers with the same tools and support, as this is crucial for the team’s development and improvement. Vasseur trusts the drivers and will continue to fully support both of them unless the situation changes in the championship fight.
