The two drivers of the Ferrari team had a collision in the early stages of the Spanish Grand Prix. Frederic Vasseur, the head of Ferrari, rejected Charles Leclerc’s claim that the crash with his teammate Carlos Sainz prevented him from achieving a better result in the Formula 1 race. Leclerc was furious when Sainz made a maneuver on the inside of Turn 1 on the third lap, resulting in contact between the two cars and Sainz maintaining his position off the track. Leclerc revealed after the race that the slight contact caused damage to his car and affected his chances, as he finished four tenths of a second behind George Russell. However, Vasseur argued that there were several occasions during the race where Leclerc lost time and missed the opportunity to secure fourth place. Vasseur stated that there were several occasions where they lost a few tenths of a second over a few laps. He emphasized the need for discussion and not drawing conclusions based on the initial comments of the driver after getting out of the car. Leclerc also mentioned in his post-race interview that Sainz deviated from a pre-established agreement to maintain their positions and preserve tire condition in the first part of the race. Vasseur refrained from commenting on whether Sainz ignored the agreement, attributing it to Sainz’s desire to impress his local fans. Vasseur stated that they do not discuss race strategies in that way, but acknowledged that the first part of the race is usually calm and focused primarily on position on the track. He denied any concern about the relationship between the two drivers deteriorating, despite this being the second incident between them this season. Vasseur expressed confidence in their good relationship and mutual trust off the track, and emphasized that such incidents are part of the competitive nature of racing. He acknowledged that the rivalry between the drivers contributed to the team’s success in the previous season.
