After the victory in Monaco, Ferrari faced difficulties in Canada and their struggles persisted in Barcelona. Despite having an updated SF-24, they found themselves behind Red Bull Racing, McLaren, and even Mercedes.

During the Formula 1 race last Sunday, Charles Leclerc qualified in fifth place, while Carlos Sainz secured sixth position. Both drivers maintained their positions and crossed the finish line in the same order.

After the race in Barcelona, Vasseur, along with other media outlets including GrandPrix247, questioned the difference between Ferrari and Mercedes. Vasseur acknowledged that they were only five milliseconds behind Mercedes in the Saturday qualifying. He attributed this small difference to external factors such as a gust of wind. Furthermore, he highlighted that Mercedes had been 40 seconds behind Ferrari in the previous race in Monaco.

Vasseur emphasized the importance of staying calm and not jumping to conclusions. He stressed the need to evaluate each race individually as the format, track conditions, and types of curves vary from one event to another. He predicted that the next race would present a completely different scenario. Vasseur also pointed out that in the last 10 years, there have been cases where different drivers from different teams have claimed pole position in consecutive races. This suggests that there is no clear superiority among the teams.

In summary, Ferrari’s performance in Barcelona did not meet expectations, but Vasseur called for caution and emphasized the unpredictable nature of Formula 1.

When asked about the weaknesses of the SF-24, Vasseur dismissed any major issues, attributing any problems to specific track conditions and the competitiveness of the F1 field. He explained that the narrow margins between teams, with four different teams securing pole position in the last four races, meant that small variations in track layout, tire compounds, and temperatures could have a significant impact on performance. This fierce competition also made overtaking difficult on certain tracks, resulting in the qualifying order often reflecting the final race classification. Vasseur acknowledged that his performance on Saturdays, rather than race day, needed improvement.

Vasseur responded to questions about Ferrari’s victories in Melbourne and Monaco, which are considered atypical tracks, stating that it was not a cause for concern. He highlighted that Ferrari had also been competitive in other races and that the current grid order may not be indicative of a clear hierarchy. He emphasized that the car’s characteristics and specific track conditions played a significant role in performance and that the upcoming races would provide a better understanding of the relative strengths of the teams.

Regarding the Spanish update for the SF-24, Vasseur expressed satisfaction with the progress they had made. He noted that all teams were constantly improving their cars and, although bringing updates did not guarantee immediate success, failing to do so could result in a decline in performance. Vasseur highlighted that their development efforts extended beyond aerodynamics and that it sometimes took a few races to fully optimize the new package. He mentioned that performance convergence had been observed over the past year and expressed confidence that they would make better use of the car in the next race.

Vasseur concluded by noting that the size of the update packages had significantly decreased compared to two years ago, indicating a more refined approach to development. He emphasized that continuous improvement was the key to success in Formula 1 and that teams would continue to bring updates throughout the season.
