Valtteri Bottas, the experienced Finnish driver, is setting his sights on a potential Formula 1 return in 2026, leveraging key connections to Cadillac’s new F1 project. As Cadillac prepares to join the sport as its eleventh team, Bottas has hinted that the American outfit’s entry could offer him a pathway back to the grid.
Cadillac’s Entry: A Game-Changer for F1
The Cadillac F1 project, part of a partnership with Andretti Global, faced initial rejection on financial grounds but has now secured its spot for 2026. Key to this turnaround was the restructuring of the team, including Michael Andretti stepping down as CEO, and General Motors increasing its commitment to the venture.
Cadillac plans to debut with Ferrari-supplied power units in 2026 before introducing its own engines by 2028. The team’s leadership, including Mario Andretti, has expressed interest in a balanced driver lineup—combining young American talent with a seasoned F1 veteran.
Bottas: A Perfect Fit?
With his Sauber contract nearing expiration and a reserve role at Mercedes on the horizon for 2025, Bottas is keen to keep his F1 ambitions alive. The 35-year-old revealed his interest in Cadillac during recent interviews, citing personal ties to Graeme Lowdon, the team principal of Cadillac F1, as a potential advantage.
“Well, there’s going to be two more seats. They need drivers, they need experience. So, of course, that’s very, very interesting,” Bottas shared.
“We have good relations with Graeme. He’s seen what I can do and bring to the team. So I see that as a possibility.”
A Strategic Move to Mercedes
Bottas will take a reserve driver role with Mercedes for 2025—a team where he spent five seasons, securing 10 race wins and twice finishing as championship runner-up. Despite stepping back from full-time racing, Bottas views this role as a stepping stone for future opportunities.
“Sometimes you need to take a step back to make two steps forward. It’s about planning for the next two to three years and positioning myself for the best chance to get back on the F1 grid.”
A Return on the Horizon?
With Cadillac seeking an experienced driver to guide its debut season, Bottas’ wealth of F1 knowledge and proven track record make him an ideal candidate. His connections to Lowdon and familiarity with Ferrari power units—courtesy of his stint at Sauber—further strengthen his case.
As Bottas positions himself for a potential Cadillac seat, the 2025 season at Mercedes could serve as a platform to refine his skills and remain immersed in the F1 ecosystem. The prospect of Bottas joining a brand-new team like Cadillac in 2026 adds an intriguing dimension to his career trajectory and the sport’s growing global appeal.
