Valentino Catalano Bounces Back to Victory in IMSA VP Racing SportsCar Challenge at COTA

Valentino Catalano NO. 30 races to win the IMSA VP Racing SportsCar Challenge race two at Daytona International Speedway, Sunday, Jan. 19, 2025.

The thrill of the race was palpable at the Circuit of The Americas as Valentino Catalano, the German racing sensation, made a triumphant return to glory in the IMSA VP Racing SportsCar Challenge last Saturday. Despite a disappointing result in the day’s first race, Catalano reclaimed his title in the afternoon session, driving the No. 30 Gebhardt Intralogistics Motorsports Duqueine D08 to an impressive victory.

Catalano, who had started the race from pole position, remained a dominant force throughout the 45-minute session. This marked his third win in four races this season, firmly establishing his prowess on the racetrack. The German speedster managed to outperform his teammate, Oscar Tunjo, in the No. 31 Gebhardt Duqueine, by a whopping 48.813 seconds.

Reflecting on the day’s events, Catalano acknowledged a bit of misfortune in the morning race as both he and his teammate seemingly ran out of fuel in the penultimate lap. However, he stressed the importance of resilience in racing, saying, “it is racing and sometimes that happens, but we knew that we were quick.” Catalano added that he felt comfortable with his car and was pleased to demonstrate his potential in the second race.

Tunjo, although trailing Catalano for most of the race, faded in the final laps, also incurring a 10-second post-race penalty for passing under a local yellow. However, this did not affect his final standing.

Jonathan Woolridge, driving the No. 54 MLT Motorsports Ligier JS P320, secured the third place in P3. This marked his third consecutive podium finish. With his second series victory in the first race, Woolridge leapfrogged into second place in the P3 point standings, trailing Catalano by 110 points with four out of 12 races completed.

Meanwhile, in the GTDX class, Jake Walker dazzled the crowd with a flawless weekend performance. Displaying exceptional skill and control, the young Pennsylvanian started both races from the pole position in the No. 6 Turner Motorsport BMW M4 GT3, securing his first series victory and completing a clean sweep with a win in the second race.

Walker’s victory was well-earned, as he navigated through lapped traffic and kept his car clean. He finished the race 10.759s ahead of AJ Muss, who drove the No. 66 AF Corse Ferrari 296 GT3 to his second runner-up result of the day and his fourth GTDX class podium this season. This sequence of strong finishes now places Muss at the top of the class point standings.

In the GSX class, Ian Porter claimed his maiden series victory, driving the No. 68 RAFA Racing Toyota GR Supra GT4. Despite a dominating performance by Kiko Porto in the No. 8 Supra, mechanical issues forced him to withdraw, paving the way for Porter’s victory.

Porter described the race as one of the scariest he’s ever driven, due to the absence of left and right mirrors and a too-dark rear camera. Despite these challenges, he managed to navigate the course largely by sound alone. Thrilled by his victory, he said, “I’m 15 months in and got an IMSA victory under my belt, so it’s nice.”

The next IMSA VP Racing SportsCar Challenge is slated to take place at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course from June 6-8 as part of the O’Reilly Auto Parts 4 Hours of Mid-Ohio event weekend. Racing enthusiasts can look forward to more action-packed performances from these talented drivers.
