Rally Portugal’s Grueling Schedule Sparks Controversy Among Drivers

The dust has settled on Rally Portugal, but the controversy surrounding its demanding itinerary continues to rage on. Drivers were left reeling from the punishing schedule that pushed them to their limits, with concerns raised over safety and the lack of time for rest and recovery.

FIA sporting delegate Timo Rautiainen shed some light on the rationale behind the grueling schedule, which saw drivers tackling long days behind the wheel without sufficient downtime. Despite the outcry from drivers like Kalle Rovanperä, who questioned the wisdom of such a taxing schedule, Rautiainen defended the decision, citing the need to appease various local stakeholders.

The inclusion of new stages on Friday added to the already intense day, with drivers feeling the strain of the extended hours on the road. While some drivers voiced their discontent, event winner Sébastien Ogier suggested that a more condensed schedule could be the key to balancing the demands of the rally with the well-being of the participants.

Organizers, on the other hand, emphasized the importance of involving multiple regions in the rally to secure funding and support for the event. Despite the challenges posed by the lengthy days, Rautiainen praised the strong organization of the event in Portugal and the dedication of the volunteers and support staff.

As the debate rages on about the optimal format for rally itineraries, one thing is clear – striking a balance between excitement for fans and safety for drivers will be crucial in shaping the future of the sport. Rally Portugal may have tested the limits of endurance, but it has also sparked a conversation about how to ensure the well-being of competitors without compromising the thrill of the sport.
