Unstoppable Connor Zilisch: From 32nd to Victory in Historic Xfinity Series Race at COTA

WeatherTech Chevrolet driver Connor Zilisch (88) enters turn one during the NASCAR Xfinity Series Focused Health 250 at Circuit of the Americas on Saturday, March 1, 2025 in Austin.

Aged just 18, racing prodigy Connor Zilisch made history at the Circuit of The Americas (COTA) recently, as he set his sights on becoming the youngest winner in NASCAR Cup Series history. His journey was not without its challenges, as he faced a daunting task in the Xfinity Series race, particularly after consecutive setbacks in Daytona and Atlanta. Yet, the young racer proved his mettle, showing his readiness to make history.

Despite starting from the pole position, Zilisch was setback by a pit penalty in the first stage, pushing him to the rear of the pack. Starting 32nd in the second stage seemed to spell the end of his hopes of victory. However, Zilisch displayed impressive determination, fearlessly overtaking competitors with his aggressive and precise racing technique.

By the 30th lap, Zilisch had already climbed into the top 16, breaking into the top 10 just three laps later. As the green flag dropped for the final stage, the young driver found himself in a promising position. Nine laps before the end, in a decisive battle with teammate Carson Kvapil, Zilisch made a daring pass that forced Kvapil wide, allowing Austin Hill and Corey Heim to challenge briefly.

Despite the heavy damage his car sustained from previous contact, Zilisch stood firm, powering through and earning the checkered flag. This victory was no ordinary feat. Coming from 32nd place to secure a victory on a challenging road course like COTA was a never-before-seen achievement. Not only did Zilisch secure his spot in the Xfinity Series Playoffs, but he also bested powerhouse Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron, who finished second.

JR Motorsports co-owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. took to social media to express his pride in Zilisch’s performance, while also hinting at the intense year ahead. “Very proud of @ConnorZilisch and @Mardylindley and the @JRMotorsports team. That battle with Carson made me nauseous. Gonna be a fun but very stressful year!” he wrote.

The final results of the Focused Health 250 at COTA saw Zilisch leading the pack, with William Byron, Sam Mayer, Austin Hill, and Christian Eckes rounding out the top five. The rest of the top 10 included Jesse Love, Taylor Gray, Ross Chastain, Will Sawalich, and Brett Perkins.

Zilisch’s historic victory against all odds is a testament to his talent and resilience. This is a developing story as we continue to track the young racer’s journey in the thrilling world of NASCAR. Stay tuned for more updates on this extraordinary young talent.
