McLaren to Dominate WEC with Hypercar Program
In a groundbreaking announcement, McLaren has declared its entry into the esteemed FIA World Endurance Championship’s Hypercar division, setting the stage for an epic showdown in 2027.
Putting an end to years of speculation, McLaren has officially given the green light to their prototype project, mirroring Ford’s strategy with a primary focus on WEC participation. The teaser video shared on social media showcases a mysterious LMDh-style prototype, leaving fans eagerly anticipating further details ahead of the grand unveiling at the iconic Le Mans 24 Hours event in June.
Last November, RACER first reported the initial approval for McLaren’s program, igniting the development of a fully funded factory LMDh venture, rumored to involve Dallara as the chassis partner.
CEO Zak Brown expressed his enthusiasm for McLaren’s return to the challenging FIA WEC series, reminiscing about their historic victory at Le Mans in 1995. Brown boldly stated, “We’re up for it. We’re back. And now, with this news, we’re going to try and win all three big (Triple Crown) races in the same year!”
As a precursor to their Hypercar debut, McLaren will participate in this year’s Le Mans event with two LMGT3 entries managed by Brown’s United Autosports team, demonstrating their gradual reentry into the competitive racing scene.
Brown’s ambition was evident when he remarked, “It would certainly be nice to see a couple of other McLarens also at the top of a different leaderboard.” Despite scheduling conflicts, Brown reaffirmed his commitment to Le Mans, highlighting the event’s significance in the racing calendar.
