UFC Signs Kayla Harrison, Two-Time Gold Medalist and MMA Champion

UFC has made a major signing in the world of combat sports by adding Kayla Harrison to its roster. Harrison, a two-time gold medalist in judo and a two-time PFL MMA champion, is considered one of the most decorated fighters in the game. Fans are eagerly anticipating her UFC debut, which will take place on April 13 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Harrison will be facing off against Holly Holm, making for an exciting matchup.

While Harrison made a name for herself in MMA competing in the women’s lightweight division, her upcoming fight at UFC 300 will be in the bantamweight division. Raquel Pennington, the UFC women’s super bantamweight champion, has expressed concerns about Harrison’s weight cut and the challenge of facing a ready Holm. Pennington believes that Harrison may not have been truly challenged in the PFL and that the UFC will provide a tougher test.

Harrison enters the UFC with an impressive professional MMA record of 16 wins, including six knockouts, six submissions, and four decisions, with only one loss. Some of her notable victories include Larissa Pacheco in the PFL’s 2019 $1 million lightweight final, Genah Fabian in 2021, and Aspen Ladd in a catchweight fight in 2023. Her only loss was a rematch against Pacheco in 2022, where she dropped a unanimous decision.

Pennington believes that the transition from the PFL to the UFC will be challenging for Harrison, not only due to the increased level of competition but also because of the weight cut. Harrison has previously fought 20 pounds higher than her current weight class of 135 pounds. However, Harrison has assured fans that she has undergone a test weight cut to ensure she can make the weight and perform at her best.

Harrison has dismissed concerns about competing in an unfamiliar division, stating that she did not have much weight to cut when she fought at 155 pounds. She explained that she typically walks around at 165 or 160 pounds during her MMA career. She has undergone extensive testing, including measurements of her heart rate, blood pressure, and blood sugar, as well as a simulated fight, to ensure she is prepared for her upcoming bout.

With her background in judo and her dominance in the sport, Harrison has often been compared to Ronda Rousey. However, she has made it clear that she believes herself to be the more accomplished judoka and Olympian. Now, at UFC 300, Harrison has the opportunity to achieve something that Rousey never could – defeat Holm. Holm was the first fighter to defeat Rousey, and a win for Harrison would further solidify her status as a top contender in the bantamweight division.

While Harrison is the favorite to win, Pennington warns that age can be a factor in the performance of an athlete. She believes that if Holm can bring back the skills and techniques that made her successful in the UFC, the fight may not go in Harrison’s favor. It will certainly be an intriguing matchup to watch as these two talented fighters square off in the octagon.
