Despite being considered the best at his position by many, Williams is often overlooked. However, his greatness cannot be denied, as he holds the record for the most Pro Bowl invites among all active NFL players, with an impressive 11 under his belt.
Williams, who was drafted as the No. 4 pick in 2010 by Washington after a successful college career at the University of Oklahoma, was a mainstay for the team throughout the 2010s. However, in 2013, a growth was discovered on his head. Although initially believed to be harmless, it was later revealed to be cancerous. In 2019, Williams underwent a procedure to remove the growth. Following this, he requested a trade and did not play that season. The San Francisco 49ers seized the opportunity and acquired him in April 2020, reuniting him with head coach Kyle Shanahan, who had previously served as Washington’s offensive coordinator during the early years of Williams’ professional career.
With Williams now on their side, along with the likes of Aiyuk, McCaffrey, and quarterback Brock Purdy, the Niners have a formidable arsenal of weapons that they did not possess four years ago when they fell short against the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. This time around, they are seeking revenge against the same Chiefs franchise in this year’s highly anticipated championship game.
