Tragic New Year’s Eve fire claims life of 18-year-old kart racing star Joaquim van Thuyne

Tragedy Strikes: Promising Young Kart Racer Joaquim van Thuyne Among Victims of Crans-Montana Fire Catastrophe

A devastating New Year’s Eve inferno in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, has claimed the life of 18-year-old karting sensation Joaquim van Thuyne, sending shockwaves through the motorsport community and beyond. The fire, which erupted at the Le Constellation bar, has been deemed a horrific tragedy, leaving in its wake a staggering 40 casualties and injuring 119 more.

Joaquim, a rising star in the karting world, was one of the youngest among the victims, with 15 of those who lost their lives being under 18. Early investigations point to a horrifying oversight: sparklers attached to bottles igniting flames that raced towards the bar’s ceiling, prompting a criminal probe into the establishment’s owners. As details emerge, the community grapples with the profound loss of young lives cut short.

In a heartfelt tribute, the FIA has expressed its sorrow over Joaquim’s untimely passing. The federation released a joint statement via social media, emphasizing the impact Joaquim had on everyone around him. “It is with deep sadness that the FIA has learned of the death of Joaquim van Thuyne, an 18-year-old Swiss karting driver, in the tragic fire at Crans-Montana on New Year’s Eve,” the post read. The FIA highlighted Joaquim’s “professionalism, kindness, and passion for sport,” which resonated with all who knew him.

The karting community remembers Joaquim not only for his talent but also for his recent achievements, including a commendable top-10 finish in the highly competitive X30 Challenge Switzerland. Racing with the Swiss Hutless Team, his potential was undeniable, and he was also involved in local football with the FC Lutry junior team, where he spent his final hours.

The emotional tribute has garnered a massive response, racking up over 70,000 ‘likes’ on Instagram, with support pouring in from prominent figures in motorsport, including former Alpine driver Jack Doohan and ex-Ferrari racer Jean Alesi. These tributes underscore the depth of sorrow rippling through the global motorsport family.

As the investigation unfolds and the community mourns, the FIA extends its heartfelt condolences to Joaquim’s family, friends, and teammates, as well as to all victims of this catastrophic event. The shadow of this tragedy looms large, reminding us of the fragility of life and the profound impact of loss within a close-knit community.

This incident is a stark reminder of the potential dangers that can lurk in celebrations, and it urges us all to reflect on safety measures to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future. The world of motorsport and its fans are left grappling with the heart-wrenching loss of a bright young talent, forever changed by a night that should have been filled with joy and celebration.
