Toyota continues its strong commitment to hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) to achieve carbon neutrality and has decided to update the Mirai with a set of improvements in terms of safety, driving assistance, multimedia, and convenience.
In this way, the Mirai adopts the latest safety and driver assistance features from the Toyota Teammate to provide more sophisticated accident detection and prevention and reduce the burden on the driver.
Regarding the Toyota Safety Sense systems, the updated camera and radar hardware enhances accident risk detection. For example, the Pre-Collision System (PCS) can now recognize potential frontal collisions, and the scope of its Cross-Traffic Collision Prevention system has been expanded to respond to approaching traffic in two lanes and cyclists and vehicles approaching from the side.
Similarly, the hazards recognized by the Emergency Steering Assist now include motorcycles, in addition to pedestrians, cyclists, and parked vehicles. With the advantage of the new acceleration suppression, there is protection against sudden and involuntary use of the accelerator when traveling at low speeds.
The new Overtaking Prevention Support avoids unintentional overtaking on the wrong side of a vehicle, and the Preliminary Deceleration Control/Direction Change Signal helps the driver safely return to the lane at an appropriate speed and distance from other vehicles.
The Mirai also features Proactive Driving Assistance (PDA), which provides a range of automatic aids for safer driving at low speeds. These include Obstacle Anticipation Assistance, which provides steering and braking support to help the driver avoid getting too close to obstacles ahead (such as parked vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists).
In advanced driver assistance systems, the Mirai now comes standard with a Blind Spot Monitor and a Panoramic View Monitor, which provides the driver with a 360-degree view.
In addition, the Mirai adopts the Smart Connect+ multimedia package, which includes a new 12.3-inch touchscreen display and provides access to cloud-based navigation constantly updated with real-time traffic information.
As an alternative to the touchscreen, the driver and front passenger can use voice commands and the “Hey Toyota” onboard assistant. The new system recognizes conversational style and can be used without muting the audio. The audio package consists of a premium JBL sound system with 14 speakers.
