Toyota Hypercar Reserve Lopez Returns to Le Mans 24 Hours Showdown

Jose Maria Lopez will return to a key supporting role for Toyota Gazoo Racing at this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours, as the Argentine driver has officially been confirmed as the reserve driver for the Japanese marque’s Hypercar program.

Lopez, a seasoned endurance competitor and multiple-time World Touring Car Champion, steps into the role after his impressive performance last year, when he was drafted in at the last minute to replace an injured Mike Conway. Lopez helped guide the team to a strong second-place finish in one of the most competitive editions of the 24 Hours in recent memory, showcasing his calm under pressure and adaptability in the cockpit.

A logical and trusted choice

This year, Toyota has chosen not to appoint a full-time test and reserve driver, instead relying on Lopez’s proven experience and strong rapport with the team. The Argentine has been competing in the Lexus LMGT3 program—Toyota’s sister brand in the GT ranks—and remains closely involved with the manufacturer’s endurance racing efforts.

To ensure readiness, Lopez has recently completed a test session at Paul Ricard, fine-tuning his familiarity with the GR010 Hybrid and maintaining competitive pace. His preparation ensures he can slot into the lineup seamlessly should any of Toyota’s six regular drivers in the two-car Hypercar operation be sidelined.

“Jose’s experience at Le Mans and with the team makes him the ideal backup option,” said a Toyota team spokesperson. “He proved last year that he can deliver under pressure and fit into the team dynamics instantly.”

Contingency planning in place

Should Lopez be called into Hypercar duty, Yuichi Nakayama, another Toyota-contracted driver, is expected to step into Lopez’s seat in the ASP-run LMGT3 Lexus entry, ensuring all Toyota-affiliated programs remain fully staffed for the twice-around-the-clock classic.

Lopez, who first raced at Le Mans with Toyota in 2017, brings deep knowledge of the circuit, the car, and the grueling nature of the event. His continued involvement reflects Toyota’s commitment to a robust support structure behind its top-tier efforts, especially as it prepares to battle for overall victory against intense competition from Ferrari, Porsche, Peugeot, and Cadillac in the 2025 Hypercar field.

As the countdown to Le Mans continues, Toyota will take comfort in knowing that, should they need him, Jose Maria Lopez will be ready—and capable—of delivering when it matters most. 🏁🇫🇷
