Not always the saying “don’t fix what isn’t broken” is applied. Toyota is making a change in its lineup for the World Endurance Championship (WEC) in 2024, with José María López moving to LMGT3 and Nyck de Vries taking his place.
The Dutchman, who competed in Formula 1 until July, will have a dual program in 2024 – combining Formula E with WEC. De Vries will be in the Toyota #7 with Kamui Kobayashi and Mike Conway, so it is a direct swap with López. In the #8 car, this year’s champions will continue: Brendon Hartley, Ryo Hirakawa, and Sébastien Buemi.
WEC is not unfamiliar to Toyota’s new recruit, who has already participated in the rookie test and competed in the full season in 2019/2020 – but in the LMP2 class. He also has four appearances in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in that category, now taking the step up to the top class. As for López, he will be with Akkodis ASP Team driving a Lexus – a brand from the same group as Toyota.
