The negotiations for Lewis Hamilton’s contract in 2023 were met with rejection by Mercedes. The team, including Max Verstappen and Toto Wolff, signed a two-year extension with Hamilton in August 2023. Despite Hamilton’s desire for a longer contract, he only received an offer for one more year, which ultimately influenced his decision to join Ferrari in 2025. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff recently revealed that the reason for the short contract was due to a disappointing past experience with Verstappen. In 2014, Mercedes had the opportunity to sign Verstappen but couldn’t due to lack of available slots. Verstappen ended up joining Red Bull and became a reigning F1 champion.
Now, Mercedes has secured the talents of a promising young driver, Italian Antonelli. Mercedes evaluated Antonelli very positively and decided to prioritize his future in F1 over Hamilton’s demands. They didn’t want to miss the chance to have the next big star in the sport, especially considering Hamilton’s imminent retirement. On the other hand, Hamilton plans to win one more championship before leaving Mercedes to join Ferrari in 2025. This season will mark the end of his long-standing partnership with Mercedes, and he hopes to exit on a high note with 24 races remaining.
Hamilton is currently facing his longest winless streak in Formula 1 history, which began in 2021. However, he remains optimistic that the W15 will have a good enough performance to keep him competitive and in the running for the top spot. F1 experts predict a successful year for Hamilton and believe that Mercedes can overcome their winless streak with time and consistency.
