Toto Wolff reveals Lewis Hamilton’s secret superbike test: ‘He fell… but he’s a natural on two wheels!’

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has shared the story of a “secret” superbike testing session where Lewis Hamilton surprised everyone by showing off his incredible skills—and taking a dramatic fall—on two wheels. The seven-time Formula 1 world champion’s passion for speed was on full display as he clocked impressive lap times, coming within seconds of MotoGP pros.

The secret testing session

Hamilton’s love for superbikes and MotoGP is no secret, but one of his more daring escapades happened under the radar. Wolff revealed that the 40-year-old headed to Jerez for a clandestine superbike testing session alongside Mercedes’ head of strategy and an engineer—without informing his team principal.

“Secretly, they didn’t tell me,” Wolff said in an interview. “They went testing at Jerez with my head of strategy, who’s a keen motorbike guy, and one of the engineers. I couldn’t get hold of them for two days.”

The situation took an unexpected turn when Wolff learned about Hamilton’s fall during the session.

“I called Lewis, and my engineer picks up and says, ‘It’s all good, we just finished biking. Whatever you hear, he’s all fine.’ I said, ‘What happened?’ And he goes, ‘HE FELL.’”

A natural on two wheels

Despite the tumble, Hamilton emerged unscathed and managed to log astonishing lap times. Wolff disclosed that Hamilton was only four seconds off the pace of MotoGP professionals—an incredible feat for someone with no professional motorbike racing experience.

“No, it’s unbelievable. The body feeling that he has is what makes him a champion,” Wolff marveled.

Hamilton’s courage and instinct on the superbike didn’t go unnoticed by those who accompanied him. Yamaha WSBK rider Michael van der Mark, who was also present, recounted how fearless Hamilton was.

“[Lewis] was not afraid at all. We told him to slow down. He was not afraid and tried to face the curves as quickly as possible. He was about seven seconds slower than us Yamaha WSBK drivers. But he was faster than most amateurs on the track.”

Hamilton’s growing love for MotoGP

Hamilton’s fascination with superbikes and MotoGP extends beyond casual testing. The F1 veteran is reportedly exploring a venture to purchase a team in the two-wheeler racing category. With Liberty Media pushing for a convergence between Formula 1 and MotoGP audiences, Hamilton’s involvement in the sport could grow exponentially.

From four wheels to two: A natural thrill-seeker

Whether it’s tearing through circuits in an F1 car or tackling challenging curves on a superbike, Hamilton’s fearless pursuit of speed is undeniable. His ability to adapt so quickly to a different form of racing highlights the skills and instincts that have made him one of the greatest drivers in motorsport history.

As Wolff put it:

“Lewis has this incredible body awareness and talent. It’s what sets him apart, and it’s why he’s a champion in whatever he does.”
