Toto Wolff Reacts to Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari Debut: “Like Seeing Your Ex with a New Partner”

Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari debut ignites tifosi frenzy: Is this the dawn of a new F1 era?

The Formula 1 world officially entered a new era last week as Lewis Hamilton donned the iconic red of Ferrari for the first time. The seven-time world champion’s highly anticipated move to the Scuderia finally came to life when Hamilton arrived in Maranello, posed in a slick three-piece suit outside Enzo Ferrari’s house, and took the 2023 SF-23 for his first laps around Fiorano.

But while Ferrari fans rejoiced, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff admitted the moment felt strange—comparing it to seeing an ex-partner with someone new.

“Yeah, it’s a little bit like you divorce amicably, and it’s all good, and then you see your partner for the first time with a new friend,” Wolff quipped in an interview with Sky Sports.

Despite the emotional moment, Wolff added that he was genuinely happy for Hamilton and praised the Briton’s signature flair.

“I told him that those pictures were iconic, that he made, that was so well curated, and no surprise with Lewis.”

Ferrari-Hamilton: The “Box Office” Blockbuster

With Hamilton and Ferrari officially united, even rival team bosses are acknowledging what a seismic moment this is for F1.

Red Bull principal Christian Horner didn’t shy away from hyping up the blockbuster pairing, calling it a dream combination.

“Look, I think it is great for Formula 1. Lewis Hamilton in a Ferrari… that really is box office,” Horner stated. “It’s just another dynamic for this year that could be super exciting.”

Indeed, a Ferrari-Hamilton championship bid—after more than a decade of heartbreak for the Scuderia—is exactly the kind of high-stakes drama the sport thrives on.

Mercedes’ Future Without Hamilton

While Hamilton’s move to Ferrari stole headlines, Mercedes’ new lineup is equally intriguing.

With Max Verstappen choosing to stay at Red Bull despite Mercedes’ interest, Wolff made the bold call to promote 17-year-old Andrea Kimi Antonelli alongside George Russell.

Although Antonelli has already clocked nearly 9000 kilometers in F1 machinery during private testing, Wolff warned that the young Italian still faces a steep learning curve in his first full season.

“Now with Kimi coming up, a young lion with a lot of talent—he now needs to learn.”

What’s Next?

With Hamilton and Ferrari on a honeymoon, Red Bull maintaining their Verstappen-led empire, and Mercedes entering a bold new chapter, the 2025 F1 season is shaping up to be an absolute thriller.

💭 Will Hamilton finally bring Ferrari back to championship glory? Can Russell take over as Mercedes’ new leader? And will Antonelli be the next F1 prodigy?

No matter what happens, this is the beginning of one of the most exciting F1 seasons in recent memory. Buckle up! 🏎️💨
