The boss of Mercedes in Formula 1, Toto Wolff, expressed his disinterest in “strategizing with individuals” when it comes to his efforts to bring Max Verstappen to the team in 2025. Wolff is currently evaluating his options to replace Lewis Hamilton, who is set to join Ferrari next season, and has made it clear that Verstappen is his main target. Although Verstappen is currently under contract with Red Bull until 2028, recent turmoil within the team has led to speculation about a possible move. Reports emerged before the Miami Grand Prix suggesting that Wolff, Ola Kallenius, and Sir Jim Ratcliffe were set to meet with Verstappen’s representatives this week. However, when asked about these rumors, Wolff refrained from making many comments, stating that there is no meeting scheduled for Monday. Nevertheless, he did not deny the possibility of future discussions with Verstappen, his father Jos, and manager Raymond Vermeulen. Wolff, 52, admitted to being cautious when discussing potential teammates for George Russell next season, as he does not want to undermine other options for the position. He emphasized the importance of impartiality and avoiding any perception of manipulating the situation. Wolff stated that they want to take their time and see how Verstappen’s thoughts develop, while also keeping an eye on other drivers. He acknowledged that the Red Bull car remains strong, putting Mercedes in observation mode for now. Wolff acknowledged that Mercedes is waiting for Verstappen, but understands that the contractual situation means there is no obligation to make an announcement. When asked if Verstappen is the key player in the driver market, Wolff responded by saying he believes Verstappen holds that position for all teams. He emphasized that the decision ultimately lies with Verstappen and that it is up to him to make the necessary choices. However, Wolff also acknowledged that there may not be a decision to be made and things may continue as they are, which would also provide guidance for Mercedes.
