Toto Wolff considera Max Verstappen como substituto de Lewis Hamilton no futuro.

Toto Wolff, leader of the Mercedes Formula 1 team, publicly stated that Max Verstappen is his preferred choice to fill the position left by Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari in 2025. However, Wolff also mentioned that he is considering other candidates for this important role within the team.

Mercedes is interested in hiring Verstappen, taking advantage of uncertainties regarding his future with Red Bull. There have been internal tensions and a strained relationship with the team management. Wolff’s interest in Verstappen became evident during a conversation with the driver’s father in Bahrain, suggesting a possible change of alliances despite the intense competition seen in 2021.

In an interview with Fox Sports in Australia, Wolff expressed his desire to work with Verstappen, although he acknowledged that the timing of this change is uncertain. He praised Verstappen’s performance but did not underestimate the prospects of other drivers. Wolff emphasized the importance of the team’s development efforts and how they could positively impact George Russell, another Mercedes driver with championship aspirations.

Wolff openly admitted that even someone as talented as Verstappen would face challenges with the current Mercedes car. This highlights the team’s focus on improving the vehicle rather than relying solely on the driver’s skills.

The decision on Hamilton’s successor is not expected to be made soon. Wolff mentioned that there will be a thorough evaluation process throughout the summer. Mercedes has a wide range of options, from emerging talents to experienced veterans, showing their open approach to filling the vacant position.

Wolff’s strategy remains unchanged, despite Russell’s performance, indicating confidence in Russell’s abilities and his long-standing relationship with Mercedes. The decision will depend on several factors, including Verstappen’s future actions and the progress of young talents like Kimi Antonelli from Formula 2.

Wolff also recognized the potential of experienced drivers like Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz, ensuring a careful and thoughtful selection process for Hamilton’s replacement.
