Hamilton Frustrated as Mercedes Upgrades ‘Make Car Slower’ After Q3 Struggles in Mexico

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has sought to clarify comments made in the new book Life in the Fast Lane that suggested Lewis Hamilton’s tenure with the team—and possibly in Formula 1—could be nearing its expiration. Wolff’s statements about the seven-time world champion sparked a media frenzy, particularly with Hamilton’s rumored move to Ferrari looming large over the paddock.

The book quotes Wolff discussing the timing of Hamilton’s potential departure and the strategic challenges it could pose, with one comment standing out: “There’s a reason why we only signed a one-plus-one-year contract. We’re in a sport where cognitive sharpness is extremely important, and I believe everyone has a shelf life. So I need to look at the next generation.”

Out of Context? Wolff’s Defense

Addressing the uproar, Wolff insists his remarks weren’t meant as a critique of Hamilton’s current abilities but rather as a reflection on the natural evolution of performance in elite sports. Speaking to BBC Radio 4, Wolff emphasized that the 39-year-old Hamilton remains a formidable competitor—provided he has the car to match his talent.

“You know that was taken a little bit out of context,” Wolff explained. “What I was referring to was that all of us age, whether it is in a car, on a pitch, or as a manager. And I was reflecting on myself, asking, ‘Am I going from great to good?’ Because in Formula 1, good just isn’t enough.”

Wolff was quick to redirect the narrative, reaffirming his confidence in Hamilton’s sharpness and skillset. “We see with Lewis that he’s very much there when the car is right. Unfortunately, we haven’t given him the machinery to fully perform, and that’s a shared frustration. His race craft and experience are unmatched, even if he’s not the same as when he was 20 years old.”

Hamilton’s Frustrations and the Final Stretch

This year has been a rollercoaster for Mercedes, with performance inconsistencies and a series of tough races in Austin, Mexico City, and Sao Paulo leaving Hamilton without the tools to contend for wins regularly. As the team heads into the final triple-header of the season, starting with the much-hyped Las Vegas Grand Prix, Wolff is determined to finish on a high note.

“We’re focused on ending this year as strongly as possible,” Wolff said. “We owe it to Lewis and the team to deliver some highlights to close out 2024. It’s about ending this chapter with momentum as we head into 2025.”

What’s Next for Hamilton and Mercedes?

Hamilton’s future remains a hot topic in the Formula 1 world. With speculation swirling about a move to Ferrari, Wolff’s comments only add fuel to the fire. Yet the team principal’s insistence on Hamilton’s enduring capability suggests that, should Mercedes provide him with a competitive car, the Briton’s pursuit of an eighth world title is far from over.

For now, both Hamilton and Mercedes appear focused on making the most of their remaining time together. Whether the partnership ends in triumph or transition, one thing is certain: the world of Formula 1 will be watching every move.
