Top 3 Conferência de Imprensa para a Qualificação no Grande Prêmio da Espanha

Parc ferme interviews conducted by Marc Gene with the top three in qualifying in Barcelona: P1 Lando Norris (McLaren), P2 Max Verstappen (Red Bull Racing)

P1 Lando Norris: It was a practically perfect lap. You know you’re on a good lap when you get excited, but everything went perfectly in the end. It was still a close competition, but I’m super, super happy. One of my, I would say, my best pole positions. I haven’t had many, but of the ones I’ve had, it was the best. We’ve been close all weekend, but that lap was truly perfect and that’s what I did today. So it was cool, the fans and my supporters here are incredible, so a big thank you to everyone who cheered for me.

P2 Max Verstappen: Yes, I think in qualifying everything came together a bit better. Throughout the weekend, we were trying to find a better balance because it was very difficult in the free practice sessions. So I was quite satisfied in qualifying. I mean, even in Q3 I got a good help from Checo at Turn 1 to extract everything we could and unfortunately it wasn’t enough. But that’s how it goes sometimes. Overall, we can be very happy with the performance in qualifying and we still have everything to play for tomorrow.

P3 Lewis Hamilton: I’m really happy. First of all, thank you to everyone. I’m very, very happy to be here and extremely grateful to be among the top three. It’s been a quite difficult year, so a huge job from everyone at the factory and we’re finally starting to see these little steps towards the guys at the front. I didn’t expect to be fighting for pole, but sometimes it felt like there was something there and maybe we were close, so being here is something I’m grateful for.

P1 Lando Norris: Our goal is to convert this pole into a race win. Of course, I think so!

P2 Max Verstappen: Yes, the lap itself was good. I even got some help in Turn 1. Overall, when you look at it, the whole qualifying session was much better than the practice sessions for me. I always felt that the car wasn’t really connected in all the free practice sessions. So when I entered qualifying, things came together much better. I think in the high-speed corners, we were particularly strong, like Turns 3, 9, and the last corner, which were easily done at full throttle. But I think, in a way, that’s why we didn’t improve as much in the last few laps, because those corners are done at full throttle, so there’s nothing to gain, and then there aren’t many corners left on the track. So, I made my gains, but I was probably already accelerating where maybe Lando wasn’t yet accelerating, and you end up losing a bit with that. So maybe I was a bit dragged into qualifying, looking back, but that’s something that is very easy to say afterwards because throughout the whole weekend we were just sliding a lot and now, finally, everything was right and you probably would have lowered the angle of the wing a bit, but that’s just how things are.

P3 Lewis Hamilton: We are making great progress. And it really is the credit of every individual in the factory who is working on the design, making the new parts that we were able to bring as early as possible for these races. And little by little, the car is becoming a racing machine that we hope we can fight with the guys at the front. George also did a great job today. So, hopefully tomorrow we can put pressure on the two cars ahead.

P1 Lando Norris: It’s a great feeling, yes. Pole positions are always good, and this is the second of my career. I mean, I had two poles in sprint races, but I don’t consider that as a real pole position. So, yes, this is the second of my career. It’s been a while since Sochi, way back… Yes, it’s an incredible feeling. It was an incredible lap. Honestly, it was my best lap by far. I practically put the whole lap together, so I had a good help on the straight. I think it was the best corner of my lap, all the parts fit together. Max was a little ahead in Q1, Q2. I knew I had to do something perfect in Q3 to get it. And that’s exactly what I did. So I’m glad the risks paid off and everything came together when I needed it the most.

P2 Max Verstappen: The lap itself was good. I even got some help in Turn 1. Overall, when you look at it, the whole qualifying was much better than the practice sessions for me. I always felt that the car wasn’t really connected in all the free practice sessions. So when I got into qualifying, things came together much better. P3 Lewis Hamilton: I’m really happy. First of all, thank you to everyone. I’m very, very happy to be here and extremely grateful to be among the top three. P2 Max Verstappen: Yes, the lap itself was good. I even got some help in Turn 1. Overall, when you look at it, the whole qualifying was much better than the practice sessions for me. I always felt that the car wasn’t really connected in all the free practice sessions. So when I went into qualifying, things came together much better. I think in the high-speed corners, we were particularly strong, like Turns 3, 9, and the last corner, which were easily done at full throttle. But I think, in a way, that’s why we didn’t improve as much in the last few laps because those corners are done at full throttle, so there’s nothing to gain, and then there aren’t many corners left on the track. So, I made my gains, but I was probably already accelerating where maybe Lando wasn’t yet, and you end up losing a little with that. So maybe I was a bit dragged into qualifying, looking back, but that’s something that’s very easy to say afterwards because throughout the whole weekend we were just slipping a lot and now, finally, everything was right and you probably would have lowered the angle of the wing a bit, but that’s just how things are.

P3 Lewis Hamilton: I’m really happy. First of all, thank you to everyone. I’m very, very happy to be here and extremely grateful to be among the top three. It’s been a quite difficult year, so a huge job from everyone at the factory and finally we’re starting to see these small steps towards the guys at the front. I didn’t expect to be fighting for pole, but sometimes it felt like there was something there and maybe we were close, so being here is something I’m grateful for.
