“Title in the Bag? Not Yet!” Zak Brown Slams Premature Celebrations as McLaren Fights for 2024 F1 Crown

McLaren CEO Zak Brown has fired back at suggestions that the team has already secured the 2024 Formula 1 Constructors’ Championship, insisting the battle isn’t over until it’s over. With McLaren holding a 36-point lead over Ferrari heading into the final three races of the season, Brown is urging his team to stay grounded and keep pushing.

“I Want to Punch Them in the Nose”

Despite McLaren’s commanding position, Brown dismissed any notion of the championship being a done deal, particularly with the unpredictable nature of F1 and Ferrari’s potential for strong results.

“36 points can evaporate in one race weekend,” Brown emphasized.
“We’ve got Ferrari, who could easily finish first and second. And anything can happen in a street race, as we saw in Brazil. For those people who’ve come up to me saying we’ve already won, I kind of want to punch them in the nose.”

“We’re Not Celebrating Yet”

McLaren’s sixth and eighth-place finishes in Brazil may not have screamed dominance, but they were enough to hold off Ferrari’s challenge. Brown made it clear that there’s no room for complacency as the team pushes to end a 26-year Constructors’ Championship drought.

“We don’t want to do anything differently. We want to do exactly what got us here,” he explained.
“The minute you think you’ve done it before it’s over, is a big mistake to make. We’re not celebrating until we’ve earned the right to.”

The Long Climb Back to the Top

McLaren’s resurgence is nothing short of remarkable, especially considering the team’s struggles just a few years ago. When Brown took the reins in 2016, McLaren was languishing in the midfield with a shallow sponsor portfolio. Fast-forward to 2024, and the team is now a powerhouse, boasting over 100 partners and a fan base that’s the envy of the grid.

“The men and women at McLaren have done an awesome job in every aspect of the racing team,” Brown said.
“From developing a race car to managing resources efficiently under the cost cap, every department contributes to our performance on track.”

A Holistic Approach to Winning

Brown credited the team’s transformation to a combination of technical excellence, strong partnerships, and a supportive culture that values its people—both on and off the track.

“It’s easy to forget how hard this is on families at home. It’s a 24-race season, and that strain isn’t just on the team but also on the partners, kids, and loved ones left behind. We’ve worked hard to create a culture that supports everyone involved.”

McLaren’s ability to secure and manage high-profile sponsorships has also been a game-changer. Brown praised the team’s commercial department for helping fund vital upgrades like wind tunnel development, a key component of their recent success.

The Final Push

As McLaren heads into the season’s final trio of races, the team is under no illusion about the challenges ahead. With Ferrari and Red Bull still within striking distance, and street circuits notoriously unforgiving, Brown is keeping his eyes firmly on the prize.

“We’re in a great position, but the job isn’t done. We’ll take it one session at a time, stay focused, and hopefully, we’ll be celebrating at the end.”

The Stakes

If McLaren clinches the title, it will mark their first Constructors’ Championship since 1998—a monumental achievement for a team that’s clawed its way back from obscurity. But as Brown cautions, in Formula 1, “anything can happen.”
